Buckingham Swans played host to local rivals Olney Ladies.
Unfortunately for all involved it was not going to be a glamorous game to watch and play. Swirling winds and heavy rained played a massive part in the fixture.
The home side put down the early marker applying pressure all over the park. Bec Bray took a quick tap penalty 5m out and thought she was through and in to score only to be held up. Then is was down to pack.. Despite the Swans being the smaller pack, they made good ground in the Scrums all day which is always a pleasing site. The their credit Olney stood firm and forced the Swans to be patient. Kat Cook rumbled over the try line, but like Bec struggled to get the ball grounded at the first attempt. The Swans were determined to score, it didn't take too long. With the pack recycling the ball well and going through tight phases, Bec Bray found herself with the ball and the back of a ruck inches from the try line, and nobody in front of her, she dotted the ball down. 5-0
With the home side getting the early advantage they looked to continue the pressure. That they did, only this time round they looked to move the ball away from the Olney pack and use the young pace out wide in Esther Barnes, Charlotte Dennis and Hailey Mitchell. Unfortunately the ball was very difficult the keep hold off, on a sunny day if ball went to hand the game could and should have been put to bed before half time.
When Olney did finally manage to clear there lines, they had one passage of play in the swans half. A great defensive effort and good exit, Swans soon found themselves in an attacking position, curtesy of some great line breaks from Sophie Lepper, Charlotte Dennis and Jean Lambert.
In fact it was Charlotte who put the Swans in a great position, a really strong carry through the middle leaving defenders falling off from her. A couple of phases later and Olney were struggling to keep up with play, they eventually slowed the ball down and conceded a penalty. Again it was sharpe reactions from Bec Bray taking a quick tap penalty, putting
Julie Nicolls and eventually Sophie Lepper in the corner.10-0 Half Time
Half Time chat was just more of the same, be more clinical, and keep moving the Olney girls around the park.
Buckingham started the second half in the same manor as they played the first half. It was more evident that the travelling team upped their game slightly but the Swans still dominating possession and territory.
It took a while for the Swans to grab their 3rd try and after some juggling around tactically as Julie Nicolls starting to struggle with injury, it was actually her who grabbed the next try, having been put into space and ran in from 15m. Despite hobbling around still found the pace to beat the defenders to the try line.
With 10 minutes to play Olney wanted to restore some pride and try and get the losing bonus point. With a try saving tackle from Charlotte preventing a certain 7 pointer, it was just unfortunate that the Swans weren't able to stop Olney scoring from the last play with their winger out sprinting forwards down the far touch line.
A great finish to 2013 for the swans who restored some momentum they had list from previous weeks.
Forward of the Match went to Sophie Lepper. A really strong performance again, scoring a well deserved try. Playing a more preferred position this week in the back row, made a massive impact.
Back of the Match went to Charlotte Dennis. Charlotte has only played a hand full of games, but showed that with some hard work on the training pitch and desire she is capable of becoming an accomplished rugby player. Bumping players of in the contact and making a fantastic try saving tackle, she was a key player to the Swans win today.
Well done to Sian Brown who had her first taste of rugby since the birth of her daughter. Great performance.
