New Years Honours Even

Buckingham vs Olney 11 January 15 - New Year’s Honours Even

First up for the New Year was a tough encounter against a big and well drilled squad from Olney who have traditionally been tough opponents for Buckingham. With a number of parents managing the usual Sunday morning car park chaos, the coaches put the boys through what for some looked a painful post-Christmas warm up. Turkey and chocolate shifted, it was time to play rugby.

Buckingham fielded their usual mixed teams Grizzles & Polars, with Olney playing an A and B team.

Grizzlies kicked off against Olney A, who started the stronger of the two teams in the early exchanges, and secured the opening score through turnover ball. This did however kick Buckingham into life who then competed well through good possession and territory, putting pressure on the Olney try line. But unable to score, the score at half time it was 1-0 Olney.

I am not sure what happened at half time but a complete loss of concentration from the kick off allowed Olney a gift to simply pick up the ball and fall over for a second score. With a couple of injuries confidence and intensity thereafter continued to fall away from the Grizzlies, with Olney scoring from a line out and from an interception to make the final score 4-0 Olney. A disappointing result given the good first half performance.

The Polars were up against Olney B which saw Buckingham dominate with Oliver Topley scoring in the first half and Matise in the second half to secure a 2-0 win for Buckingham.

A quick turnaround saw a reverse of the fixtures.

Grizzlies, with a couple of changes, took on Olney B which turned out to be a game Buckingham dominated from start to finish. Willoughby opened the scoring ripping the ball from the first maul to go clear for a Try. Good running through the forwards including a couple of strong drives from William, led to tries from Alex B and Rory before George went over to make it 4-0 to Buckingham at half time.

Being able to maintain the intensity this time in the second half further pressure was rewarded with second tries for George and Willoughby to make the final score 6-0 for a good win and a much better performance.

Polars, again with a few changes, took on Olney A, who picked up where they finished against Grizzlies scoring 3 first half tries. A more competitive performance in the second half from Buckingham held Olney to only one more score. Olney A winning 4-0.

A third round of fixtures on a bigger pitch followed. With a new back line, impacted by a number of injuries, a changed Grizzlies team were up first against the Olney B team who started the stronger of the two team applying constant pressure, leading to the opening score. From the kick off weak tackling in the Buckingham back line allowed Olney through to make it 2-0 to Olney. Finally Buckingham got their hands on the ball with good driving through the forwards a score from Matise made the final score 2-1 Olney.

Finally, a reshuffled and strong Polars side lined up against Olney A. The first saw good competing and good defence from both sides to keep the game all square at half time. Confusion from the second half kick off by Olney created from pressure by Jo saw Alex B score the opening, and what turned out to be the only, try to secure a good, hard fought and well deserved win for Buckingham 1-0.

Six games played, 3 wins, 3 losses and overall honours even but a good run out for the boys with an important win in the final game. Now where did I park that car??
