Match Report U12s vs Chinnor
A cold and blustery morning for a rearranged fixture at Chinnor proved to be a tough but good workout for the boys. With the coaches looking ahead to the Banbury festival next week, the boys were arranged into two mixed teams to take on two teams from Chinnor.
The Polars started their first game well applying immediate pressure on Chinnor resulting in the awarding of a 5m penalty to Buckingham which William W took on the charge to dive over and open the scoring 1-0 Buckingham.
Chinnor soon got into their stride and started pressuring the Buckingham line, but good tackling by both backs and forwards held them out until Chinnor managed to go over from a well taken line out ball. Half time 1-1.
The second half proved to be one of the most tightly contested periods of rugby the boys have played all season, with credit to everyone for showing good discipline in defence and at times some good intensity in attack. The boys were unlucky not to go over in the final minutes, when more composure was perhaps needed to convert the opportunities created. The half ended scoreless and a well competed game finished 1-1.
The Grizzlies were up against perhaps the stronger of the two Chinnor teams. Like the Polars the Grizzlies started well with Mathis offloading to Isaac F to open the scoring for Buckingham. Chinnor responded well scoring twice before halftime, and then three further tries in the second, with William B. scoring in reply for Buckingham. A tough first game for the Grizzlies going down 5-2.
The fixtures were then reversed with the coaches also taking the opportunity to switch a couple of players between teams.
The Grizzlies unfortunately started where they left the first game, missing tackles and loosing out at the breakdowns, conceeding three quick tries to Chinnor. Some strong words from the sidelines kick started the boys to start playing the rugby we know they are capable of, with a step up in focus and drive, the boys started to win ball and put pressure on Chinnor, with Isaac F running in to open the Buckingham scoring and make it 3-1 at halftime.
The second half started with Buckingham continuing to pressure the Chinnor back line and secure good ball which lead to the ball being passed down the line for Charlie D to make it 3-2. This was quickly followed by a third score after good mauling by William W, Tom P secured ball for Jack to rumble over to make 3-3 and complete the comeback.
The contest continued to ebb and flow with the defences remaining on top preventing any further scoring, albeit again Buckingham will feel they could have and perhaps should have won the game.
The Polars competed well throughout their second game holding their own against tough opposition, but ended up losing 3-1 with Kyle scoring for Buckingham.
A tough morning against very competitive and well organised opposition that should set the boys up well for the Banbury festival next week. Hopefully all those who took knocks today will be available.
