What the hell did you put in that water?

United went into Sunday's game hurting from their narrow 3-2 loss against second place Eagle Athletic, a game they should and could have won.

Next up was the Nag's Head, who at the start of the game had conceded 27 goals - just like United, although nine places in the league table separated the teams at kick off. Fair to say it has been a strange year so far in the Milton Keynes Sunday League Premier Division for United, it feels like every team has been beatable, but luck has been against the boys in blue and white. Perhaps today was a day for a well deserved lucky break, when previous games have gone against United - often unjustly.

United took their time to get into the game. The passing was sloppy, and the defending was questionable at times which allowed the Nags Head to take the driving seat.

The Nags Head began working the ball comfortably in United's half with their wing back's pushing right up, but United did hold firm and a goal looked unlikely. Despite the Nags Heads dominance in possession and willingness to run at Buckingham, it was a long ball which got them the opener - their busy centre forward found the ball drop to him kindly in the box, and with one movement he swivelled and drilled into the bottom corner. The shot was tame, but the quick decision to shoot meant that the ball evaded Andy Whitehead in goal, who didn't get chance to position himself for the shot.

The Nags Head now pilled on the pressure, and Andy Whitehead had to come off his line to make a one-on-one save from the same centre forward. Whitehead stood tall and pushed the forward out wide before waiting for support from his defence, and United had survived another attack.

The Nags Head had a very close shot from distance shortly after, but this shot was symptomatic of their half - despite absolutely dominating United, they had only created one clear chance and United began to sense they could get back into the game.

Ashley Corrick, Ashley Urquhart and Dale Armitidge began to gamble on Lewis Dench's hold up play and push the Nag's defence for the first time sensing an opportunity. This allowed Josh Hooper and Solman Janecki the chance to spread the ball from deeper holding midfield roles, and use their engines to push the Nag's defence back.

United found themselves in the Nag's box a few times but Lewis Dench couldn't pick out a man, or find the target himself on a couple of occasions. Hooper did force the keeper to worry though - the energetic midfielder curled a rasping effort marginally wide just before the half time whistle went.

It felt like Buckingham had been battered, but it was still only 1-0 and there was a chance to get back into the game. The Nags Head made a number of changes at half-time while Buckingham brought on Kemzi Elenwo for Ashley Corrick who had split his boots.

Buckingham's defence began the second half positively - debutant Marco Marsala brought the ball out well from centre-back, and player-manager Jake Honor was cutting out everything alongside him. Wing backs Cam Harrington, and Will Lee were also beginning to have an offensive influence on the game by looking to play the ball forward at every opportunity. This meant that United's defensive line was much higher, and the Nag's Heads lone striker - their danger man, and outlet was far away from the United goal.

United began to search for an equaliser, and Kemzi Elenwo added some much needed width to the attack. Elenwo found himself in the box and rasped a shot into the side netting at the near post. This was the closest United has come to a goal, and
it appeared to encourage the team. Hooper and Janecki began to pick the ball up from deep and look to bring United forward with every pass - the pressure was relentless but the final ball was never quite right.

Hooper appeared to get bored of trying to play the perfect pass, so decided to try and run the ball into the net. The midfielder picked the ball up just inside the opposition half, and beat his man leaving just two defenders in front of him - Hooper had momentum on his side and charged through the Nag's Head centre backs with ease to find himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. A tough chance, but Hooper smashed home under the advancing keeper and United had their equaliser. Game on - United celebrated a deserved goal.

What on earth possessed the Nags Head defender to do what he did next nobody will ever know. He inexplicably he threw a headbutt towards a melee of players before proceeding to morph into Connor McGregor, grabbing Ashley Urquhart and trying to knee him in the head before being reprimanded by his own team mates. The ref understandably dished out a straight red and United found themselves with a great chance to win the game.

United had their game faces on now, and looked like winning. Soon after, Janecki picked up the ball from deep and looked to bring the ball forward. He saw Elenwo in space on the right wing and player a good ball for the winger to run onto and Elenwo showed a burst of pace to create space to hit a shot. In an almost identical position to his earlier shot that rippled the side netting, Elenwo almost burst the net with an effort that flew right into the top corner. United were now 2-1 up against second in the league, and deservedly so.

The boys in blue and white played out the game very well by passing and moving amongst a now depleted Nag's Head side whose heads had well and truly dropped. The ref blew his whistle and United recorded a long overdue win.

Next up for United, a trip to Newport Pagnell to face the Garage MK.
