Ramblers entertain Ilford to-day having played them in our first game of the season in the FA Cup which resulted in a poor 9-0 defeat. So our hopes are high to-day that we could improve immensely on that score and if there was any complacency in their camp we could take advantage of that. However, due to holiday and family commitments, 4 players were unavailable from the midweek side and a further 5 players are side lined through injury which has left us down to the bare bones for to-day's selection. The Ramblers were delighted to have 2 young mascots for the day, Alex and Lewis who came out for the warm-up and led the team on to the pitch for the customary pre match handshakes and coin toss. It is anticipated that the Ramblers will have regular mascots for home matches so, if interested, please contact a either a member of the Management team or a club official.
The match was only a minute old when Ilford were hurried in to a mistake in the heart of their defence and an excellent opportunity arrived for Charlee Hughes but he shot wide of the far post. The game was even for the next 10 minutes until a poor pass by our goalkeeper Reece Clarke presented the Ilford centre forward with a glorious opportunity which he calmly slotted in the corner of the net. Reece redeemed himself a little later on with an excellent save from a fierce shot. Shortly afterwards, Ramblers forwards forced the Ilford defence in to another error and this time Grant Webb had an even better chance but instead of shooting immediately in to the unguarded net, he chose to control the ball and shoot wide. Grant some 10 minutes later was again running towards goal and was brought down by a defender resulting in a free kick some 25 metres from goal which again came to nothing. A slightly unsavory situation arose on half time between Bobby Bird and an Ilford player squaring up to one another, resulting yellow cards being issued to both. HT 0-1. Once again, the first 10 minutes of the second half were crucial and it was imperative not to concede a goal in this period. Once again, our concentration lapsed and we conceded within 5 minutes of the restart and to make matters worse we conceded a third 5 minutes later. Ramblers managed to regain their composure and started to control the game and push forward proving to be the better side for the last 20 minutes but were only able to reduce the deficit with a well taken Charlee Hughes goal. Final result 1-3. Once again a much improved performance with the team showing excellent effort and application but lapses in concentration are proving costly against sides in this league who are experienced and take any chance offered.
We go again on Tuesday night when we are away to Enfield 1893 whose home ground can be found at:- Barrow Farm Stadium, Harlow Arena, Elizabeth Way, Harlow CM19 5BE.
Our next home gain is Saturday 10th September in the FA Vase against a team from Barnet called London Lions who play in the Hertfordshire League and we appreciate any support you can give on the day to the team.
