The Ramblers, who beat Brentwood at the weekend, had their chances, but went down to a goal either side of the interval.
Boss Keith Wilson made one change from the side that beat Brentwood - with Charlie Kirby returning to the side.
After a hectic start to the first half, both teams had the opportunity to opening the scoring.
On ten minutes, Ramblers striker Neil Richmond only had the Romford goalkeeper to beat but his lob from the edge of the area went straight into the arms of Aaron Omand.
Ramblers had a further effort five minutes later - but Billy Hunt took one touch too many and ended up dragging a shot wide of the target.
And them chances cost Ramblers dearly as Romford took the lead when Jack Barry rose highest at the back post to connect with a free-kick taken by Joe Oates.
On 43 minutes, Ramblers had Louis Goodwin Green to thank when he saved well, bravely blocking a close range effort from Danny Jones.
But the lead was soon doubled early in the second half as Oates once again took another free-kick - this time being met in the area by Nick Reynolds.
Ramblers refused to throw in the towel and had numerous opportunities to reduce the deficit.
Their best effort came on 80 minutes when substitute Nikki Beale had the ball in the back of the net - but was ruled out for an infringement inside the penalty area.
