He was a member of our Club for many years and served on the General Committee for a number of them, as well as being Club Treasurer for quite a few seasons. He followed the 1st XV closely and was not only a regular at Peel Croft, but would also travel to many away games, even offering to do the driving on occasion! I know we gave out about him at times and he was an easy target for some mickey-taking with his trusty old Nokia mobile, lack of tech knowledge or having to listen about sailing stories from his boat, but he always took it in the spirit it was meant. But believe me, he could also give as good as he got. David was a very good friend to many and a great character who not only generated a lot of income for the club but also interest amongst others.
Always organising something or other and he had such a wide range of friends, young and old, rich and poor. He always listened to what you were saying and would remember the most random of things the next time he would meet up with people.
Over the week I have received several calls and messages, all shocked and saddened by the news. But each one spoke with such genuine fondness for David.
David called me a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was to thank me for drawing his number out in the 200 Club, but he didn't know anything about it. So I told him he owed me a drink or two as he'd won the top prize of £1000. Oh well, we'll never have that drink now David, but I'll make sure I raise a glass, with a handle, once the new Clubhouse is open. He will be greatly missed by so many and we are truly richer for having him in our lives.
David's funeral will take place at Bretby Crematorium on Wednesday 17th February, you are welcome to join the family remotely by webcast. The family have asked for donations to be made in David's memory to the RNLI or Burton RFC, these can be donated online by following the link below.
