BRFC Women work hard to over come a very physical Amber Valley team...

The first league game of the season was keenly anticipated as we travelled up the A38 to Somercotes and a experienced Amber Valley outfit. Burton travelled with a petty settled pack but a new (ish) looking back line after a couple of late cry offs and holidays. We discovered our first school boy error of the season when we found the water bottles were left at home and a big hand young Callum Stokes who saved the day at the local coop with a couple of packs of water on a pretty hot day. The 2nd school boy error of the day was only leaving ourselves 30 minutes to stretch off , have the refs briefing and do some run through's, I would like to think (fingers crossed) we won't repeat these as we go through the season. On to the game, we started playing up the slope into a slight head wind in the first half, which was it turned out a good call. Burton received the kick off and tried to stretch Amber across a wide pitch, little errors let us down and gifted Amber scrums, Amber had a very big pack and played a forward oriented game supported by their 10 who had an excellent boot on her. The game was well contested and very physical but Burtons defence first class and up to the challenge. It was a good 30 minutes before anyone scored and it was Burton who crossed the white wash first we did have 3 x good have opportunity's to score before this but the last pass went astray or the cover tackling was good, however on this occasion Mylene out paced the cover to score out wide for a 5 pointer. Amber came back strong and camped in the Burton 22m for 10 minutes but failed to score. The 2nd half Burton played a bit more pragmatically and used the slope into the bottom corner to good effect penning Amber in their own half. Tyia scored next from short range and this was followed by another unusual try, Debs at 10 had a cracking game and marshalled the backs very well in both attack and defence, but I think she would agree the kicking boots were left at home, Debs in the Amber 22m went to kick to the corner from a penalty however the ball came off her foot straight up in the air no where near the touch line and as it fell to the ground like a wounded pheasant realising her error she set off and chased it down, the kick was miss-fielded by Amber and a little prod on the ball saw it go over the try line for Debs to fall on it and score 5 point, pretty sure that was the plan from the outset. Amber came back and got a 7 pointer after Burton conceded a series of penalty inside their own 22m meters, so 7 v 15 and everything to play for. However Burton's hard work in the pre-season started to come through and they scored the next 3 try's, with Amy, Ellie and another from Mylene. The game finished 7 v 30. A word for Preet playing her first ever game who like the others last week did the shirt proud, all the Women put in a proper shift it would be hard to single any out, but I think Ellie playing at 8 for the first time ever had a stormer and was nominated woman of the match, lots more to come from Ellie I think. Lots to work on still at training not lest kicking and handling under pressure, and the set piece needs a couple of tweaks. On a sad note Cami took a nasty knock and was clearly in pain, hopefully noting too serous and I know we all wish her a speedy recovery.
