Burton kicked off, Whitchurch miss fielded the ball then infringed on their ten metre line. A penalty by Dave Archer put Burton ahead inside three minutes. Sustained Whitchurch pressure saw across field kick which went dead, Burton drop out took play into Whitchurch’s half, following a penalty Burton won their line out, Captain Harry Titley moved the ball out to Archer who broke through the opposition defence, a great supporting run by number 9 Eddie Nicholls saw him take Archer’s pass to score a great try under the posts, which Archer then converted to put the visitors ten points ahead after twelve minutes and well in control of the match.
The hosts now started to exert pressure of their own, Burton conceding a penalty after the referee deemed Burton to be holding on the hosts no 12, opening the score for them on thirty minutes. Whitchurch continued to press and Burton conceded another penalty for not rolling away following a tackle their kicker obliging with three points on thirty four minutes and half time came with the hosts pressing having just missed a penalty Burton caught offside.
After the break Burton receiving and the hosts continued to press a good clearance up field by Titley with the hosts no 15 slicing his clearance to give Burton a good field position. Burton took the ensuing lineout and drove forward with the excellent industrious Jack Neil peeling of the back to score. Archer missed the conversion making it 15 points to 6 and the visitors back in control. Following indiscipline by the hosts second row he received a yellow card the game began to wind down and the hosts only chance of scoring came from Burton being in disciplined ten yards being added by the official the penalty attempt was missed and the final whistle went.
