This was a poor start to the 2019-20 league season as Burton entertained newly promoted Paviors at Peel Croft on Saturday.

The Nottingham side were soon on top. They won the ball from a scrum and although there was a suggestion that one of the Burton centres had been obstructed the referee was happy that nothing illegal had occurred and the visitors’ centre burst through the gap to open the scoring. The try was converted.
Burton tried to hit back immediately but found it difficult to penetrate the solid defense and made handling errors. Paviors were awarded a penalty when Burton were offside at a breakdown from the ensuing lineout the visitors set up a maul and drove towards the line and then released the ball for the blind side winger to score. This time the conversion was missed.
Burton’s play at this stage was strewn with errors while the Paviors backs passed the ball with speed and accuracy and their strong pack got over the gain line each time they carried the ball. After a missed tackle in the centre The Paviors’ centre broke through and passed to the winger who scored in the corner. The conversion was again missed but the visitors were well on top. There was no further significant action in the half, so the half time score was 0-17
Although Burton started the second half determined to get back into the match, they were still making handling errors. The visitors scored two more tries both of which were the result of poor tackling in the midfield. These tries were both converted to take the score to 0-31
The visitors probably eased up knowing they had the game won but in the last 15 minutes the home team finally got some cohesive passes together and when the ball got to winger Josh Kent he crashed through to score. The conversion was missed.
From the kickoff Burton ran the ball again and full back Will Simpson joined the line to score under the posts. He converted his own try.
Burton continued to attack and following a scrum the ball came out to fly half Harry Titley who scored under the posts. Burton refused the conversion attempt in order to save time to get the fourth try and win a bonus point. However, the visitors defense held out so they could not manage it. The final score was Burton 17 Paviors 31.
