The A team welcomed last years league champions Luctonians to the Croft on a glorious saturday afternoon.
The first half was pretty much a war of attrition with only a penalty separating the teams for most of the half. A missed pass gave the visitors an easy run in for the only try of the half.
Half time:
Burton 0-10 Luctonians
Burton came out in the second half like a bat out of hell. Straight away from the kick off Andy Livingston collected the ball, which was quickly shipped along to Harris Mountford, who used his speed and strength to push through tackles to score.
7-10.
The visitors responded almost immediately, poor communication at the back, allowed for a dubious try in the corner to be scored. 7-15.
This time Burton hit back, TJ caught the ball out wide and ran through the centres and round the fullback to score. 14-15.
Another mistake from the Crofters gave the ball straight back to Luctonians who after a few passages of play, they dotted down in the corner again. 14-22.
The match was a real tussle, with neither side wanting to drop the intensity. Burton got some advantage and the ball was passed out to Mountford, who again handed off his opposition and went over the line again. 21-22.
With only 5 minutes to go, both sides were nervous. Simple errors meant the game was stuck around the halfway line. It was Luctonians who finally broke the gainline, the number 8 running in from the 22 to all but seal the game for the visitors.
Burton hammered the line in the final minutes to find a hole. But it was not meant to be.
A great spectacle in the second half, with both teams giving very little. The A's now turn their attention to Syston away next Saturday.
