After last week’s away victory Burton B XV played hosts to near neighbours Lichfield on the rejuvenated Ox-Hay hoping to improve on their winning ways, but unfortunately it was the visitors who left for home with the sweet taste of victory.
With an abundance of players Burton started well putting Lichfield under good early pressure and an early bustling burst by Danny Jansic marked his seasonal debut with a try to give Burton an early lead. But the opposition struck back with an unconverted try and a penalty goal to take a 5-8 lead as halftime approached and just on the whistle they increased that with another well-struck penalty goal to increase their lead.
Starting the second half 5-11 down Burton threw everything into attack with Ben Waldron, Ian Baker, Matt Smith and Chris Cooke making short, powerful drives into opposition ranks. From one of these Waldron linked with Jack Handy and Kieran Dadley to force his way over the line to put his side within one point of Lichfield. But the visitors stormed back to add two further unconverted tries and take a 10-21 lead with fifteen minutes to play.
Burton upped their efforts and stayed camped in Lichfield territory and after a seven phase move involving Nat Wrathall, Steve Cramp and Zak Sutton new comer Rob Lee took the final pass to mark his debut with a fine try. Trailing by only six points Burton produce a fantastic last few minutes with a wonderful team display as their forwards piled on the pressure and the backs tried every trick they knew get over the opposition line, but it was not to be and Lichfield returned home with the victors spoils.
