Burton RFC v Walsall RFC U15s

This was a cup tie that had all the romantic overtones of David vs Goliath, Man City vs Brentford or Joe vs the volcano. The boys from Burton felt this in their hearts and began the first half unlike any first half they had started before, strong. Within 5 mins Kobie had rattled the Walsall defence only to be pipped on the line forcing Walsall to kick. This return kick fell into the arms of Johnny who immediately released the awesome pace of Dan Burns to run the ball home between the posts. Charlie made the kick look easy and we were off. It didn't take Walsall more than 6 minutes to try and even the score but they didn't count on young Josh holding up their effort, the score remained 7-0. After a few minutes of back and forth the ball fell to Ryan Moll who decided to show the Walsall team that pace and determination will lead to a scoring charge across 3/4 of the pitch. 12-0! Warning bells did ring on the 30th minute that saw Walsall win a scrum and quick thinking led to a try. 12-5. Halftime. When asked for whom the bell tolls it was clear that Walsall knew as they were a different side in the second half. An early wayward pass by Walsall seemed to give Burton a lucky escape but the try was only delayed due to poor decisions and ball handling off Burtons excellent line out. 12-12. The next Walsall try came from great vision in seeing a gap and kicking across the field to score and convert. Visions of the opening game of the season must of been raging in the Burton boys heads but rather than allowing themselves to lose their heads they instead battled as a team to have Kobie eventually cross the line. This was to be the last Burton score although we came close again later in the half. Walsall scrummed well and showed discipline and vision which saw the final score 17-31. In my humble opinion this shows that the general trend for this team is positive and improving, given the score line last time they met. The boys should also be proud that their attitude has also improved. A big thank you to the Walsall players, staff and supporters. Bring on Sutton Coldfield!
