Burton v Newcastle U/13

With heart taken from some excellent training sessions and the play from last fortnight’s game against Lichfield; Burton U-13s went to Newcastle (under Lyme) looking for victory.

The game started with some rock-solid play and the game was played mostly in the Newcastle end of the middle of the pitch, with the Burton forwards making a huge impact on the play. Despite the Burton back-row making some decent runs, the first try went to the home side making a successful break from set play, with the conversion being successful.

Burton fired back within minutes with (Burton man of the match) Jacob Ruprecht running in a jinking try to bring the scores closer, but the conversion attempt from Travis Day falling slightly short of the crossbar from a valiant attempt from the left of the pitch.

After the first half, Newcastle were quick to work in another try, but failed to make the conversion stick.

The Burton lads refused to capitulate, with Kieran Ride, Theo Hamilton and Jacob Ruprecht making some amazing tackles to halt the Newcastle attack under renewed pressure from the home side and held hard and fast to then make a great break, feeding the ball out for Jacob Ruprecht to again run in a try, but still no conversion which would have levelled the score.

With the scent of victory in their nostrils, the Burton boys rallied and laid siege to the Newcastle try line, with forwards Sam Thorpe, Matt Stockin and backs Matt Baker, George Abel and Will Wynne-Raji making breaking runs through, only to be denied by a solid Newcastle defence refusing to break.

At the final whistle, the score was 12-10 to Newcastle. Burton can take pride in having played solidly for the whole match and the shiny new – sponsored - shirts, (thanks Else Law and Wates Construction), weren’t so shiny.
