Burton U13 vs. Leek U13 – Staffordshire County League

On a cold, windswept Oxhay, Burton suffered their worst defeat of the season so far with handling errors leaving Burton handing the visitors victory.

With Leek starting, they took advantage of the strong legs of their kicker to place themselves firmly in the Burton half. With the home side resolutely holding the attack up and starting to repel them back towards the halfway line, a lapse in concentration going forward handed the opening score to Leek on the five minute mark, their Number 8 running the try. They failed to capitalise and the conversion failed to materialise.

Burton answered back less than five minutes later, with Joe Ensor running in a well deserved try but again, the conversion attempt failed to split the uprights and the scores remained level until shortly before half time, when Leek again ran in with a try.

In the second half, Leek made another try (again failing to convert) before Burton went for - and got - a second try, Jacob Ruprecht finishing a hard-run push from Burton, but a failed conversion meant no closing of the scores. Many valiant efforts came from forwards and backs alike to try and break through a well-drilled Leek defence, most notably from man-of-the-match George Abel, who made several piercing runs deep into opposition territory

Leek proved to be very tough opposition, with them proving too good for Burton by running in a further try to take the game out of the home sides hands and hand them a first defeat in the County League.

The final score came in at Burton U13 10 – 20 Leek U13.
