Burton U13's hosted a freindly end of season game against a very sporting side from Camphill RFC.

What a great finale to our season, on Saturday evening, when we played our last game as U13’s to a fine and sporting opposition from Camphill RFC, Birmingham.
The sun shone and the BBQ sizzled (thanks Rose) as all available players pulled on their match shirts for the last time until September.
Camphill were also suffering with dwindling numbers, due to holidays, injuries, cricket, ballet etc and Nigel the Manager put an extra twist on things when he forgot the kit bag with all match shirts in!
‘Captain Kitbag’ Steve Briggs came to the rescue and managed to find some spare match shirts from his cupboard however they were the brown blue centenary shirt, so in a bizarre way, on a pleasant April evening Burton ran out onto the Croft to play Burton, all be it Camps’ in disguise.

We started well and to the delight of the Coaches all the work on the training field during the winter came to fruition and we saw good communication, great lines of running, quality body position and a belief in themselves. Forwards’ ruck’d with confidence and power to secure good ball for Oli to distribute along the backline. Confidence was the new kid in town!

Chaz started the batting with a strong run through the Camps backs’ to score in style, the second try was a pacey run from Ben ‘the legz’ Mason who worked the overlap and outpaced the opposition defence. Jeri was not going to let the ‘handbags’ have all the glory and muscled over the line despite the visitors best efforts to stop him.
Our new signing from Holland Park, Dom Tydeman was playing at 8, after a fine job against Tamworth on Thursday, he proved his worth and raw talent by scoring two good trys, his first in a Burton shirt, followed by a cheeky drop kick conversion. Well done Dom, you have settled in extremely well.
Finally with 10 minutes to go Zak-Atak Dyche came back onto the field to finish an excellent personal season. From a line-out ball he saw the weakness and powered over the touchline with several Camps’ hanging onto his shirt.

What a great evening we had, and the score line does not actually reflect the quality game that it was. Our opposition Camphill RFC, with seriously depleted numbers, pitched up, played in the wrong shirts and certainly gave us a run for our money! At no point did they falter or give in or lose face. They played with strength & dignity and the sportsmanship of the Coaching Team is certainly reflected through the attitude of the players. We hope to meet again next season, when both teams are at full strength, and the Coaches have a little longer to have a ‘scoop’ at the bar together and reflect on coaching practice and the modern game.

On a parting note, a big thanks to our referee Tom Handy who did a splendid job and is looking forward to his weeks’ holiday at Camphill on Sea! 
