On the Croft

Running out onto the Croft seemed to gee up the youngsters, and they showed an impressive defensive line from the outset. This saw the first Melbourne attack thwarted and fom the resulting turnover a fast paced attack was launched, J Summers finishing off an excellent team move. From the restart more impressive defensive work saw Burton secure turnover ball, from which C Spemdlove scored. Melbourne did hit back with a couple of trys, until B Mumford started to control the midfield, coupled with the impressive defensive work of M Tolley, and Burton took control again. A solid defence, and some good suport play in attack, saw trys by Mumford(3) and another for J Summers. Some good running saw D Sturman take the direct route to the try line three times, T Harrison kept his try taqlly up with a try and for all his hard work in defence, M Tolley was rewarded with a try.

Burton 30-30 Melbourne
The second game was a much tighter affair, good defence off both teams mean't that the try scoring was limited. Teamwork was the key to Burtons trys, and a couple of good runners was the key to Melbournes trys. J Summers(2), H Abel, O Partington, D Sturman and B Mumford the try scorers for Burton, but a ll the young Crofters deserve a mention for their hard work in defence and unselfish attacking play.

Burton 30-40 Melbourne
The final game saw some weak defending from Burton, which allowed their opponents to score at will in the first half, Burton did pick their game up in the second half and trys from T Harrison(2), E Brown and C Maughan kept the score resectable, but the victory was deserved by Melbourne.
