Burton travelled into Leicestershire for a friendly fixture against Syston, with a disappointingly small squad of only 16 players, which was also more than a tad light on U18 representation, not what you want on any trip to this part of the world. Burton won the toss and went into a slight head wind in the first half. The 1st score went to Syston with the softest try of the season so far, close to 22m, grubbered through upcoming defence for the centre to pick up and pop down. A bit of a shake up and Burton got on it with some powerful runs from Riley, Kian and Frankie on point for the short balls, the ball recycled several times and Kian went over close to the posts. The 2nd try came from George wide out again after some good powerful forward drives sucking in the defence. Syston came back hard, their play coming off their 10, who didn’t run or kick too much but whose distribution was excellent. They scored x 2 well worked tries, before Riley cross for a well-earned try. The final came to a close with another try to Syston. Half time scores 26 v 17. The 2nd half and the reality of a small squad on such a hot day became apparent as Syston made 7 changes with Burton now down to a bare 15 players. Playing a bit more territory thanks the wind and scored a good try when Jacob L, hit a nice line and ran straight to score under the posts and it was tit for tat scores the rest of the half, Burton got 2 more one through Sam tsl after some quick thinking and even quicker hands on a penalty close to the line and the last one from George wide out. The lads were dead of their feet at the end of the game after giving a 110% in heat. The game ended 43 v 34 and to quote the referee a great advert of colt’s rugby with both sides playing exciting expansive rugby. Had Burton turned up with 22 players like they tend to for home games then the outcome might have been different / closer. On the positives, the lads themselves picked up on how Syston were playing and adjusted their defensive alignment to help combat that, and they did create plenty of chances to score, with 2 try’s being held up and a couple of knock on’s with the line begging. All in all a great effort against a well drilled team. Hopefully we will reverse the result when Syston visit us later on in the season.
