Burton welcomed Coalville to the Croft for a league fixture and were looking to continue their unbeaten run in the competition. The Burton squad was huge with 26 players available with plenty of strength in depth to call on. Skipper Riley won the toss and it saw Burton play into a strong wind for the first half. The game took 10 minutes to settle down before Burton got in there stride with a slick backs move, the ball going out the back and down the line to create a 3 on 2 and the pass was well timed for Jacob to take and score. This was followed shortly afterward by another similar move with the same result, Jacob again scoring near the posts. Coalville came back with one of their own before Tom W, got a try in the corner this after several good passages of play with options either side at the breakdown of the last ruck and the scrum half picking the right one. Half time scores 17 v 5. The 2nd half saw Burton start to feed in the changes to personnel and off we went again only this time with the wind at Burton’s backs. Burton worked good field position before Riley hit a nice line flat out to crash over under the posts. Coalville worked themselves up the field and they got a score back. Matt Baker got the next try with after a good backs move, still plenty to do from Matt who dived over to score before the cover arrived. Young Matty scored a proper scrumhalf’s try with a lovely snip from a ruck again under the posts; he gave the dummy pass and darted through to score. Jacob got his hat trick wide out and the game ended with a good individual try from George who took a quick tap penalty and danced around the Coalville forwards to score under the posts. The game ending 48 v 10. A good game with good continuity given the number of changes to personnel in the second half. The score line is a tad harsh on Coalville who are a good team but with a squad of only 16 to draw on they ran out of a bit of puff towards the end. Hopefully with 26 Burton colts looking for a game on a Saturday we can expect 26 at training...we will see.
