Bury V Vagabonds

Bury vs Vagabonds
Match report: by Stan Millea
After a long pre-season Bury finally got their season underway.
Following the league reshuffle and a return to RFU league system, Bury will find themselves up against teams well known to them and a host of new teams. Bury’s first opponents in this new league system are Vagabonds (Isle Of Man).
Given the step-up in league standard and disjointed pre-season fixtures due to a late cup competition call off Bury could be forgiven for a nervy start.
What actually entailed from the kickoff was some of the best rugby that Bury have played over the last couple of seasons.
A strong start from the home side led to an early free kick for a scrum infringement. A quick tap from scrum-half Ben Cross and good interchanging from the forwards led to an opening try for captain Dan Palmeiri.
Vagabond's heavyweight pack started to make its mark gaining advantage at scrum time with the Vagabond no.8 making good runs from the base. An organised Bury defence was able to restrict Vagabonds from taking any advantage until a penalty from an intentional knock-down gave Vagabonds a chance for 3 points.
7-3
Bury kept up the pressure and a scything run from fullback Matt Sutcliffe led to quick hands across the backline and a try for Tom Smith. From the kickoff, Vagabonds exerted pressure in Bury half until an excellent turnover from Garfieh Cheung led to a penalty to Bury and the pressure was relieved.
The game continued at a frantic pace with Bury exerting further pressure and a misqueued kick led to an opportunistic try for John Lord. Vagabonds did come back into the game but were restricted to adding 3 points. A flurry of exchanges led to 2 more Bury tries, both collecting their second for the day Dan Palmieri and Tom Smith. An entertaining half even attracted spectators from the sky with the police helicopter pausing to watch the end of the first half.
What the second half lacked in points it did not lack entertainment with good rugby from both sides and a try for Bury winger Sam Lyth.
Vagabonds finally got themselves a try of their own through their no.8.
This try brought Vagabonds to life and they enjoyed a period of possession. If anyone thought a comeback was on the cards Bury’s staunch defence had other ideas. After soaking up a period of pressure a great run from no.8 Ross Hopgood put Sam Lyth away, only for him to be held short by excellent cover defence from Vagabonds. Captain Dan Palmeiri was first in support and was able to sneak over the line to complete his hat-trick.
Conversion narrowly missed.
42-11
The remainder of the game continued to be open, the referee playing his part allowing advantages and communicating clearly to both sides. However, Bury did test his patience in the last five minutes and a flurry of penalties close to the Bury line led to a yellow card for replacement hooker Taylor Clough.
Final Whistle
This was an excellent all round display from Bury against a good Vagabonds side who we wish well for the rest of the season and look forward to seeing on the island for our last game. Bury entertain our friends from Dukinfield next week, and will be hoping for a similar display.
