Brislington 0 - 2 Cadbury Heath

Well, it’s good to have competitive football back if that was anything to go by! It’s been a difficult week for the club off the field and a bit of a rollercoaster after the low of the arson to the Terry Green Memorial Bench but then the high of the football family’s amazing response, including a donation on the night from Brislington (absolutely fantastic), so it was good to get back to some football. It was a pulsating game last night away at Brislington in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, the first competitive game for both sides for over 5 months that saw the Heath triumph 2-0. A classic cup tie under the lights that had a bit everything and was played at a frantic pace for the whole 90 minutes in front of a great crowd of 221 with both sides well supported. The Heath started with Ollie Jones in goal, Trey Anderson at right back with Ali Bamford at left back and Ollie Price partnering Heath Captain Toby Rennie in central defence. Liam Oswin was on the right hand side of midfield with Jake Thomas on the left and Eugene Keary and Ben Wych in the centre. Ben Brooks patterned Luke Bryan up front. On the bench for the Heath were Tom Smallman, Loui Ward, Tom Welling, Ash Kendall, Matt Huxley, Sam Crumb and Chris Humphries.
Both sides started the game with attacking intent and the first half-chance fell to the Heath on 5 mins when a poor kick by the Brislington keeper found Ben Brooks 30 yards out and his stinging effort fell just wide with the keeper scrambling. On 12 mins Brislington responded when a great cross from the right found a Brislington player running in from the left who blazed over. Brislington had their best spell of the game and on 17 mins a long kick by their keeper found its way through to a Brislington striker but his scuffed shot was well held by Ollie Jones in the Heath goal. On 18 mins a well placed pass sent through a Brislington striker who’d broken the Heath back line but Ollie Jones was brilliantly off his line to win a 50/50 challenge outside the area. The Heath were under pressure in that 2 or 3 minute spell but rode the storm. The deadlock was broken on 27 mins when a
surging Heath move found Jake Thomas who crossed to find Ben Brooks who rifled home with his first goal for the club, 1-0. On 30 mins the Heath went close when Ben Brooks stuck again from long range but the keeper did well to claw his effort away for a corner. Brislington almost equalised in the 31st minute when they went through on goal, the resulting shot was brilliantly parried away by Ollie Jones with follow-up efforts blocked by committed Heath defending. On 38 mins the Heath broke again and carved through the Brislington midfield, the ball found its way to Jake Thomas who slotted the over-lapping Ali Bamford through on goal but he dragged his effort wide of the far post. On 41 mins the hosts were reduced to 10 men when Ben Brooks brilliantly turned his marker and was through on goal, he was clipped just outside the penalty area and the Brislington player was shown a red card for a professional foul. The resulting free kick was taken by Brooks but his superb effort was just held by the keeper at his near post. It remained 1-0 at halftime.
The 2nd half continued at the same pace as the 1st and Brislington almost breached the Heath back line down the right hand side but a brilliant recovery challenge by Ali Bamford cleared the immediate danger with the ball going out for a corner - Brislington delivered another quality set piece but the Heath back line, who were dominant in the air all night, dealt with it and cleared the danger. On 58 mins the Heath made the first substitution with Ben Wych being replaced by Tom Welling in central midfield. On 60 mins a corner from Brislington was cleared back out wide and an excellent ball back in was well punched by Ollie Jones in a crowded 6-yard box. This started another spell of end to end football that saw Tom Welling win the ball well in midfield a minute later and send Ben Brooks clear but his initial effort to square the ball to Luke Bryan was blocked as was his follow up effort on goal. On 62 mins Ollie Jones again saved well when a long range effort was well held down to his right. 64 mins and the Heath almost extended the lead when a superb lofted through ball by Trey Anderson perfectly met Ben Brooks run and his sliding side-foot volley lobbed the Brislington keeper and agonizingly hit the far post and bounced clear - that would have been some goal. The Heath were dominant now but just couldn’t find that killer second goal, a penalty area scramble saw three Heath shots blocked before the ball was eventually cleared. On 68 mins the 10-men of Brislington almost got an equalizer when a free kick from 25 yards out was driven low but crashed against the far post and back out to safety. The Heath made their second change of the night on 68 mins when Matt Huxley replaced Luke Bryan upfront. On 75 mins that substitution almost paid dividends when Eugene Keary, who’d been superb all night, intercepted the back and slotted a perfectly weighted pass out to the right to find Ben Brooks who made ground and then passed across the penalty area to find Matt Huxley, his first time drilled effort was well saved by the Brislington keeper. The Heath continued to hunt for that elusive second goal and again went close in the 78th minute when a great ball in from Tom Welling from wide left just evaded Ben Brooks sliding in at the far post. Liam Oswin went close with an excellent free kick from wide out on the right that was well parried by the Brislington keeper. The final sub of the night was made in the 87th minute when Loui Ward replaced the excellent Ollie Price in the heart of defense. The Heath sealed the game in the 91st minute when a ball out wide found Matt Huxley, he surged towards the corner flag to kill time but turned his man and played a low pass into the penalty area that found Liam Oswin, who turned his man and created space to drill home and seal the win!
An excellent win in what was a superb cup tie that had a bit of everything with two sides playing good football - the Heath worked hard for the win and the starting 11 and the 3 substitutes all played their part - standout performances go to Ollie Jones, Ollie Price and Eugene Keary. The Heath will face Bristol Manor Farm at Springfield in the next round on Sat 12th September. The Heath are back in action this Saturday (5th Sept) in the first league game of the season when we host Wellington at Springfield.
