Cobra 10 – 11 Bala
Bala ended Cobra’s interest in this year’s North Wales Cup with a hard fought victory in Meifod. As has too often been the problem this year Cobra’s impotence from the kicking tee proved their undoing. Missing half a dozen kicks ensured once again a good perforce did not result in a victory.
Defeat did have one silver lining with the long awaited return of Captain Aled Davies who had been absent since playing in Bala at the start of the season. Cobra opened the scoring through their captain who used his strength to power over from close range after some excellent work form the Cobra forwards.
Bala hit back with a try from their number 8, poor defensive organisation from cobra at a ruck on their own line allowed the Bala player to nip over the line untouched.
Bala increased their lead to 6 points courtesy of two penalty kicks after Cobra transgressions. Cobra hit back when after a flowing move where the backs cut through Bala only to be denied on the line, from the resulting ruck Alwyn Williams spotted Tom Wilde completely unmarked on the touch line and a quick pass allowed the young winger to touch down. With the conversion missed Cobra needed any score to take the lead and young halfback Harry Jukes put his hand up and attempted a penalty from near half way, agonisingly the kick fell short. Cobra battered the Bala line for the rest of the game and with time elapsed secured a scrum 5 on the Bala line, with one last effort Cobra went for the victory but as had been the case all afternoon execution let the home side down and the referee’s whistle sounded a victory for Bala.
Cobra get the chance of revenge this weekend hosting Bala at home in the league.
