Cobra welcomed Denbigh in the final match of the season at Cae Cobra Meifod

Denbigh had already secured promotion and the division two north league title but were keen to gain revenge on the cae cobra men after they were defeated at home by them earlier this season.

The first half was a very close encounter with neither side taking a backward step. Both defences were watertight with both sides determined to finish the season with a victory.

Cobra eventually secured the first try of the afternoon. Centre Llew Williams burst through the Denbigh defence and showed great strength and pace to give the home side a 5-0 lead. A wil Worthington conversion made it 7-0 to the home side at the half time break.

Denbigh showed why they were league champions straight away in the second half. Their first attack came to fruition and saw them level the score at 7-7.

Denbigh captain Tom seddon then finished off a very good counter attacking move to give Denbigh a 12-7 lead. Conversion missed

Cobra’s forwards then began to dominate the visitors pack. The home sides scrum began to dominate and a number of penalties were awarded to the home side near the Denbigh line. From another set scrum, number 8 Ryan Goodwin picked up and forced his way over the whitewash. Wil worthington converted, making it 14-12 to the cae cobra men.

Denbigh struck back immediately and scored their third try of the afternoon to make it 17-14.

But cobra didn’t give up and decided to play to their strength and keep the ball in the forwards. The home side were causing the Denbigh pack all sorts of problems at the set piece. A line out 5 meters from the Denbigh line was driven forward and hooker Steven Isaac ploughed over from close range. Wil Worthington again added the conversion

The bonus pint try was scored by winger Ieuan Williams. Impressive flanker lee Hughes intercepted the a pass and made a break towards the Denbigh line- he found wing Williams in space who galloped to the line and dived under the posts. Worthington again added the conversion.

The cobra front row union of Hywel Jones, Steven Isaac and Nico Williams were enjoying dominate at scrum time and a penalty try was awarded as the Denbigh pack disintegrated on their own line. This extended cobras lead to 35-17.

As the full time whistle blew the delight was evident on the players faces.

Club captain Hywel Jones said -
‘ it’s been a long and tough season but to do the double over the league champions shows the potential within this group of players.
The boys can now enjoy a rest for a few months before pre season starts. Next year we hope to make a big push for promotion back into division 1’
