It's just under 4 weeks until the Bob Kennedy Cup celebrates it's 40th Anniversary with a match between the Camborne School of Mines and the Camborne Crusaders.
So here's a piece from Camborne stalwart Ted Williams about the first time R.D Kennedy played for the Cherry & Whites and the repercussions it caused!
Bob played his first match for Camborne against Redruth on Feast Monday 1947. Two other C.S.M players, T.G.Williams (scrum half) and Peter Malan (wing) also played in that game.. It was a unique game in that it was the first rugby match to be broadcast on the radio after the war, on what was then the West of England BBC.
Camborne won 13- 0 much to the consternation of the Redruth president Jack Richards who complained to the CRFU about the CSM players turning out for Camborne. A bye law was introduced that CSM players could only play for other clubs out of term time. The gate money from that game was £110.00. Equating that with a sixpenny gate the attendance was 4000 ( sitting in the stand was extra. )
Apocryphal story : A Redruth supporter on hearing the result took a "dag" to the radio smashing it with the words " You bloody liar!!!"
