Reserves earn first league win since the opening day of the season
Reserves show great team spirit in battling back to win 2 - 1 over rivals
A week off last Saturday helped some injury recovery while the usual changes were made to the squad. Ryan returned from his holiday to Florida to be on the bench, with Jonny P in the starting line-up following his work trip to San Francisco. Cam is available once again to take his place in goal, timely as Luca is unavailable. Tom suffered a leg break last time out so now a long-term absentee.
Team: Cam, Csaba, Kenny ©, Josh, Jack, Baz, Jonny P, Guy, Mike, Martin, Rob
Subs: Ryan, Lewis, Macca, Scott
A poor first half. That's all to say really. Hardwick scored about 30 minutes in, moments after they had a goal disallowed for an obvious handball by their forward. It could have been more with better final balls and crosses. Baz came close with a couple of chances from the edge of the area, while Rob came off injured after 20 minutes giving Scott his chance to impress.
We improved greatly in the second half, putting the opposition under pressure from kick-off and showing much greater intent. Scott worked hard up top closing balls down and bringing midfields into the game. Guy continued his battle with Hardwick's best player, their left back, down our right. Less than 10 minutes into the half, Baz was third time lucky as a strike from the edge flew into the top corner (via a slight deflection) to make the game level at 1 - 1.
The visitors had the ball at times but lacked the creativity and accuracy to challenge us too much. Substitutions helped keep our energy up as well as solid when defending. We entered the final 10 minutes with our tails up and another piece of well-worked play down the right saw two shots blocked but the ball fell to Jack at the back post who drilled his shot low past the despairing keeper.
Hardwick tried to attack but we saw out the game comfortably, although with nervousness, to win our first game since beating Godmanchester Reserves back in our first game of the season in mid-August.
Team spirit seems to be a real feature of this team now, along with quality - for at least half a match anyway. A home game to Senior A's Orwell next Saturday in the cup gives us a chance to build on this performance without expecting a result...
