This morning took us to Luton, where last year we took a bit of beating towards the end of last season. We were very light on numbers but managed to get 18 together, and we started well moving the ball to the wings and offering solidity up the middle. Our line speed was good and Matt Mac as usual was putting in some testing kicks pushing luton into tricky places, and Darius sprung into action to chase down back peddling Luton player to take the ball and dive over in the corner. Matt Mac missed a tough kick, but it was a good start. Theo was having a big game up front against a very useful Luton pack, and ably assisted by Noah, Jack, Caleb to name afew we were quick to the ruck and strong in the scrum and it gave us a good platform.
We were also looking good when we moved the ball quickly to the wings and Mason C used his pace to great effect to finish a nice move, that’s four in four for Mason which is impressive. Luton were very much in the game though and any lapse in focus and they would take advantage making good yards up the middle on a number of occasions. One of those runs resulted in a couple of missed tackles from our side and nice run and finish under the posts for them. We were still playing well though, and V-man in the past couple of weeks is playing like he’s had not 3 but 4 Shredded Wheats for breakfast, and today was no different. Matt Moody picked up the ball and moved it down the wing to Reece who made good ground, V-man picked it up and with a great show and go with help from Darius on the outside, stepped inside the full back to score.
We started the 2nd half a bit slower, picked up a couple of knocks and our defensive line speed dropped off a little, but that slight drop off made a big difference and Luton took advantage smashing up the middle to score under the posts. We realised our error and Noah, Matt Mac, Jack to name a few stepped forward to ensure that sloppiness didn’t hold with us for long. Luton’s subs were making a difference though and it was a very close game, Zak and CJs had to make some super last ditch tackles and we needed Matt Mac with his trade mark kick and run rugby to score and give us a bit of breathing space midway through the half. Luton kept pushing and were rewarded with another try up the middle, but we held on for a good win with an injury ravaged squad. We executed the gameplan well and showed proper team spirit to come together against one of the larger packs we will play this year. Final score 19-24 to Camelot. Lots of great performances, but a couple of mentions to Theo, Noah for great forward play, CJs for some awesome recovery tackles and Zak for playing most positions on the pitch.
