We were back for a league game this week against fullerians and had the good fortune of welcoming back our talisman Matt McDonald after a hernia op. We played fullers earlier in the season, but we knew this would be a very different game. With the absence of riad, we brought Zak into scrum half, and no Austin meant Will was at fullback.
We managed to start well and had a reasonable level of control at the breakdown, and we were beginning to earn the right to play, with a level of intensity to our play and good line speed in defence, that started to cause fullers to make mistakes. We also had Alfie sporting his Ferrari haircut, and making some good in roads, one of which resulted in a great finish after a strong run. We were camped in fullers half for the first 15, and Zak in the middle was causing all sorts of problems with his pace and power. Zak was proving hard to stop, and ran in 2 quick tries after some great teamwork involving Thomas, Mason and the 2 Matts. Fullers then woke up and started to exert some pressure on us, moving the ball better and using their quick players to get down the outside, and if it wasn’t for Matt mc and will, we would have been in trouble. Their pressure did eventually tell though, as they scored just before half time.
We went in at the break 15-5 to Camelot, but we know workrate was the key in the 2nd half to keep fullers contained.
We rung the changes at half time, bringing on 5 subs, and whilst we lost a bit of territory for the first 10, but held firm. Mason, Thomas and Matt Mc were tackling like demons but we were starting to flag a bit and we were picking up injuries. Fullers had a particularly quick player who was causing problems and he was getting round the side of us, eventually crossing to make it 10-15. Then Matt Mc then pulled off a spectacular jinking run, kick and almost gather, but then after some sustained pressure Matt mc made it count with another nice run and finish. We were running out of steam though and fullers put us to the sword, after a couple of missed tackles meant their captain crossed twice more. That was that, some really promising points in the first half especially, with a bit more fitness we would of finished them off.
Final score 20-20, man of the match was Matt Mc with a great return to action, and most improved was Reece, who looks a very promising winger.
