Report from 'Ruffy Snr'

Camp Hill came into this game buoyed by their overall form holding up well throughout the season and with the knowledge that whatever team was selected a positive result would never be too far from reality, however having no “form guide” to give any indication of the likely outcome, an open minded approach and self belief were to be Camp’s point.

With the above in mind, what was to follow can only be described as outstanding, from the kick off the ball was collected by Rob Hill who having made valuable metres went to ground for the ball to be released to the backs and seven passes resulted in what has to be our finest score of the season when Liam Lindsey from the left hand wing passed to Robert Freeman (pic) to dot down under the posts to give Simon (Barney) Edwards the simplest of conversions to put Camp’s into a lead of 7 – 0 with the game barely one minute old.

With the game now starting to settle into even possession it was to be Matt Clarke who on fourteen minutes broke down the blindside and kicked ahead for “who else” but Robert (Nobby) Freeman to collect and once again break the hearts of the opposition by scoring his second and somewhat decisive try that Barney Edwards narrowly failed to convert to put the Sill’s 12 – 0 behind.

It was to be a further 6 minutes before Sill’s had what has to be described a very easy kick for three points following an infringement by Camp’s to begin their climb back into the game only for the ball to sail past the left hand upright, a sight that was to probably tell them it was not going to be their day! For just five more minutes had elapsed when Lloyd Roberts was seen to his “sniping best” to score a somewhat uncontested try that Barney was to convert making the score line 19 – 0 with just twenty five minutes played!!

In complete control of the game at this point it was to be Barney Edwards once more who seemed to have ages to set himself up for one of very few drop goals to be seen all season bringing the score to 22 – 0.

Camp’s were far from finished for on 37 minutes our skipper Mark (Newt’s) Newton was seen to somehow intercept a long pass close to his own twenty two metre line and ultimately pass to an ever eager Matt Clarke to run in the simplest of tries under the posts to give Barney yet another simple conversion to bring the score to 29 – 0.

Pressure was to be the order of the half and no sooner had Sills re started the game did they find themselves behind their line whilst Barney kicked yet another conversion following a move that saw skipper “Newt’s” finish off the move to give on the stroke of half time a score we could not have dreamed of – 34 – 0.

The second half began with much of the same and our domination of the scrummage was to see, after seven minutes of play our “eight” push Sill’s off their own ball with the result that Lloyd Roberts was to score his second and Camp’s sixth try and give Barney Edwards another straightforward conversion to give a score line of 41 – 0.

Only another 8 minutes had gone by when following a strong surge of play by our forwards did we see Lloyd Roberts off load to Rob Hunt to score an unconverted try to give an unbelievable score line of 46 – 0.

On twenty minutes of sustained pressure by a spirited Silhillians side did the referee decide to send Austin Bolger to the “Bin” for ten minutes (longer than he had been on the playing surface it has to be said) and Camp Hill had to withstand a barrage of pressure from a determined Sill’s and is was only that the home side determined to keep a clean sheet that they were to be denied.

With but a couple of minutes left in this amazing game our forwards drove their opposition over their own line at a scrimmage for Rob Hill to score close in so as to enable Barney to have the last word so as to speak by kicking the conversion that gave a final score of 53 – 0.

Beech House, Solihull Man of the match went to Robert Freeman whose two early tries and strong defensive play helped set the mood for this fine victory that next season will see Camp Hill renew old rivalry with Dudley K – Hereford, Stoke and Burton to name but a few – – may you all enjoy your summer – September not too far away!!
