Report c/o Steve Smith

Saturday’s early kick-off saw Camp Hill host Long Eaton in Round 3 of the Midlands Intermediate Cup. Long Eaton have won their last 3 league games in Midlands Two East North and a competitive encounter was anticipated.

In common with recent games, there were several changes to Camp Hill’s line-up. Mark Lisle, Matt Clarke and Reece Chapman-Carry were missing from the back line. George Wilkinson, Jake Shilston, Ben Summers and Ben Taylor all started. Lloydy came in at scrum half for Stu Watts and Mark Newton was back in the row. Adam Pinfield was missing, and Mitch Lee took the 6 shirt.

Following a well-observed 2-minute silence, Camp Hill started very brightly. The ball found its way to Halby following a stray line-out, he broke a tackle and sent Newts in under posts. Briggsy converted. Shilts very nearly added to that after a kick through. After 10 minutes breaks from Mitch and Halby sent Ben Summers in under posts. Briggsy converted to give us a 14-0 lead.

If Camps thought this was going to be easy, we soon found out it wasn’t. A dropped restart was followed by several phases of possession for Long Eaton before the no.5 dummied through for an all too easy score. This was converted and soon followed by another 3 points.

With a quarter of the match gone, a great lineout take by Newts and the ball was delivered to Leechy. He rode through the tackle and passed to Halby who finished strongly. Briggsy kept up his 100% record thus far with the conversion.

Approaching half-time and Barney was yellow carded for playing the scrum half in the ruck. Briggsy added another 3 before Long Eaton added another all too easy converted try. There was still time for the Long Eaton centre to get yellow carded for not rolling away. The resultant penalty was executed by Briggs.

HT 27-17 to Camps.

The 2nd half started in positive fashion with Jake going over the in left corner following pressure. The conversion was missed. 32-17.

Though the lineout was having one or two misfires, the scrum was dominant after a shaky start. Total annihilation of the Long Eaton scrum lead to a kick through but a knock on prevented another try.

After 55 minutes, Long Eaton reduced the gap with a converted try. At 32-24, the outcome of this match was by no means certain. However, this changed when their centre was awarded a 2nd yellow card and meant that Long Eaton would be a player short for the remainder of the match.

On 65 minutes, yet another yellow was awarded, this time to Camp Hill’s Ben Summers for a deliberate knock on.

Long Eaton were looking dangerous but a great tackle by Lloydy followed by a Halby turnover released the pressure.

Further brandishing of the yellow card followed a high tackle after a good break from Mitch. At this point it was 14 v 13 in terms of headcount.

With about 5 minutes left Will Wallwork scored an astonishing try whereby he carried several tacklers 20 yards to score under posts. Briggs converted.

The referee seemed to lose 3 Camp Hill points and there was some consternation as to what the real score was. The correct score of 39-24 was a fair reflection on the game.

This coming Saturday sees Camps travel to Tamworth to take on the unbeaten league leaders. It would be great to see a large Camp Hill contingent supporting the lads.
