Midlands Division One West
Whitchurch 10 - 3 Camp Hill
Domination of the first half (with the aid of a distinct breeze ) sadly meant little to the outcome of this affair as we reached the break at 0 - 0.
The pack's control was highly encouraging in those first forty minutes, even when temporarily down to thirteen men (yes, the disease has not yet been eradicated) but we were unable to make real inroads into their rearguard to turn pressure into points.
That powerful effort did bring the award of four first half penalties, yet in contrast to earlier matches , "Briggsy" failed to find his range in a pointless half !!
Within four minutes of the re-start however he eased us into a lead with a kick into the wind but Whitchurch, lifted by the favourable elements, hit back in the fiftieth minute with a try from left wing Steff Coombes.
Now enjoying more ball the hosts kept knocking on our defensive door and eventually found a way through for replacement Lee Blackhurst to dot down in the corner. With fifteen minutes still to play we began to take the action back into the home half and although repulsed our efforts hinted that a converted try to level, as still a possibility.
Whitchurch however thought differently and retained sufficient possession in the latter stages to eke out their win.
A couple of telling breaks late in the second period from replacement and new boy George Wilkinson caught the eye but the back division was not at its best on this day and will, I am sure do much better at the weekend.
On Saturday we are away again , this time at Lichfield where the kick off is again at 3.00 p.m.
Unfortunately , I won't see you there, but I am around for VPs Day the following week when league leaders Dudley Kingswinford are the welcome visitors.
