The best all round Camp Hill performance since Kidderminster nearly a year ago was the opinion of one touchline sage and it is hard to argue with that assessment.
A five try victory over the league leaders with three for the backs two for the forwards albeit one of them coming in the form of a penalty try.
Such was the Camp Hill superiority that Leek were restricted to 2 long range penalties in the first half both expertly converted by fly half Gary McDermott and to one significant attack in the second half which resulted in a try when the game was already lost.
The first Leek penalty was the opening score of the game and it took the home side 20 minutes to establish a lead they were never to surrender. During that period the Camp Hill pack established their superiority in the set piece, twice driving Leek of their own ball. On the second occasion with the ball at number eight Stephen Halbert’s feet the try was only prevented by an infringement and a penalty try ensued. Barney Edwards converted as he did all but one of the afternoons tries.
Leek reduced the lead with their second penalty before another excellent scrum allowed player coach Halbert to pick up and feed scrum-half Lloyd Roberts who sidestepped and broke clear before feeding full back Mark Lyle for an excellent try. The 14-6 halftime score line barely reflected the Camp hill superiority.
There was a flashpoint early in the second-half with which resulted in home winger, Jake Shilston and the Leek number eight Joel Booth receiving yellow cards. Shortly afterwards the Camp hill forwards showed their dominance in the line out taking and driving an amazing 60 metres from their own half ending with skipper Mark Newton and flanker Adam Pinfield just being stopped on the line.
From the resultant 5-metre scrum, however, Leek were again pushed off the ball and replacement number eight Rob Hill picked up and scored. Shortly afterwards the scrum superiority gave him the chance to pick up again and feed Roberts who slipped the ball to winger Shilston for a bonus point try in the corner. Edwards produced his best kick of the day, converting from the far touchline.
A superb break from centre Sam Brooks nearly resulted in another try but Camps had to settle for a Barney Edwards penalty and a lead of 29-6. The home side then switched off momentarily to allow the Leek score but then rounded off an excellent afternoon with a try from scrum-half Roberts sniping from the back of the scrum which as ever was going forward.
