Report from 'The Puff'

Camp Hill had to work hard for their fourth victory in a row but in the end, just came out on top against a much-improved Old Yardleians. Our neighbours from Tile House Lane were combative throughout and, on balance, deserved more than the single bonus point they achieved.

Things started well for Camps when a trademark catch and drive from a line out in the opposition 22 enabled the forwards to rumble over and give skipper Mark Newton the first of his two tries on the day. The conversion was sweetly struck by Barney Edwards for a 7-0 lead after only 3 minutes.

The visitors came back strongly and after a period of pressure in the Camp Hill 22 they were awarded a penalty for a high tackle in front of the posts, which reduced the deficit by 3. The visitors continued to have the majority of possession and when Camps were penalised
or a crooked feed in their own 22,the resultant free kick led to the visitors crossing under the posts for a deserved 10-7 lead.

Camps finally managed to get some ball of their own and Barney Edwards levelled things up with a penalty. The increasing Camp Hill pressure led to a series of penalties in the Old Yards 22,a yellow card for one of the visiting back row and another successful penalty for Barney to retake the lead.

Camps nearly made the numerical advantage pay when strong runs from Stephen Halbert and Jonny Betty took them close to the line but it was the visitors who recorded the next score drawing level with a penalty on the stroke of half time.

Camps started the second half as they had the first and although Barney missed a good early penalty attempt the best move of the match so far with Adam Pinfield and Lloyd Roberts prominent, was finished off by the skipper forcing his way over in the corner.

All this good work was undone immediately when Camps failed to deal with the restart resulting in a penalty being conceded in front of the posts. The visitors’ decision to opt for a scrum rather than take the kick was vindicated when this led to a try in the corner, which was improved by an excellent conversion.

The visitors were now well on top, aided by some Camp Hill errors and poor kicking but the home side were resolute in defence lead by flankers 'Halbey' and Adam Pinfield who tackled everything that came at them.

Eventually the pressure was relieved by a couple of hopeful hacks forward and Camps were able to get a foothold in the Old Ys 22.After a period of pressure on the try line, man of the match Lloyd Roberts was able to leap over the pile and score the winning try under the posts.

There was still time for more Old Ys pressure but resolute defending and the calm efficiency of the Camp Hill line out meant there were no further scares.

A well contested game which saw Camps cement their position in third spot and will give Old Y’s hope in their battle against relegation.

Next league game is in two weeks time at Shrewsbury.
