Report from 'The Puff'

Camp Hill cruised to a sixth successive victory with a seven try victory over Stafford. In front by four tries by half time they allowed the game to drift a little in the second half when the visitors enjoyed periods of possession but their defence was strong and they were always dangerous on the break.

Stafford found themselves under pressure from the kick off and were a man down after only five minutes when the referee yellow-carded their number 8 for a red zone infringement. The resulting 5 metre lineout produced the first score with the unstoppable Adam Willis touching
down at the rear of the rolling maul.

Several chances were spurned by the home side in a one-sided opening before scrum-half Lloyd Roberts put a clever kick into the 22, Stephen Halbert followed up to force the Stafford defender back over his own line where fellow back-rower, Harry Cunningham, ripped away possession and touched down.

The third try came after 20 minutes when another forward drive was stopped just short of the line and hooker Willis was on hand again to pick up and force his way over. The bonus point try came on the stroke of half time in spectacular fashion. Coach Halbert gained possession outside the Stafford 22 and weaved his way, untouched, to the line as the defence bought dummy after dummy. Another unsuccessful conversion attempt left the score at 20-0 at half-time.

Camps conceded a penalty in their own 22 at the start of the second half which allowed the visitors to put some points on the board but it didn’t take too long for the fifth try to be scored. Strong running from Harry Cunningham and replacements Oz Bolger and Rob Hunt took the ball deep into the Stafford 22 and when the ball came out to the backs Barney Edwards clever pass sent centre Jonny Betty under the posts. Barney converted to make it 27-3.

With the result now in no doubt, Camps allowed Stafford into the game a little more but although they enjoyed a good deal of possession they rarely threatened. On a rare excursion into the Camp Hill 22 they were thwarted by a tackle by debutant winger Nick Hails.

Camps finally put the icing on the cake with two late and contrasting tries from replacement Number 8 Rob Hunt. The first came when Camps took a 5-metre scrum against the head, walked the visitors back over their own line for Hunt to touch down; Edwards added the conversion. The second was the last play of the game when he intercepted the ball on the opposition 10 metre line and showed a clean pair of heels as he raced to the corner. The fact that the man he replaced, Adam Pinfield, (pic) was named man of the match shows the strength Camps possess in the back row.

Final score Camp Hill 39 Stafford 3. No game next week but the following week Camps travel to Stourbridge to play the League leaders
