Report c/o 'The Puff'

Camps made it five wins in a row with another bonus point victory at bottom club Shrewsbury, inspired by a superb all-round performance by coach Stephen Halbert. Deputising for top scorer, Steve Leach, at number 8, Halbey revelled in the freedom of relinquishing second-row duties to give a vintage display in attack and defence in what was an excellent team performance.

Playing up the slope and against the wind, Camps had to weather an early Shrewsbury storm and it was soon evident that the strength of the home team lay in the pack with some big ball carriers and a solid set piece. Weather the storm they did and when Camps finally got some possession Briggsy carried the ball deep into the Shrewsbury half, combined with winger Ant Davis giving Dan Robinson the opportunity to stroll over the line for his first try of the season.Briggsy, who was to prove perfect from the tee all afternoon, added the conversion for a 7-0 lead after 10 minutes.

Harry Cunningham followed up with a typical break through the middle but was stopped short before Shrewsbury got back onto the front foot.Harry,Halbey and Adam Pinfield were all prominent in the defensive effort but a penalty from Shrews was drilled into the corner and Camps were faced with a 5-metre line-out. The danger was averted by a brilliant steal from Halbey, and shortly afterwards the player-coach stopped another attack with a tackle and rip to clear the danger.

Having survived the pressure Camps had chance at the other end when Barney Edwards put the ball into the corner from a penalty. A clean catch, a forward rumble and Dan O’Grady touched down. Briggsy made light of the touchline conversion and the visitors led 14-0 after 25 minutes. The try scorer was then tackled off the ball and Shrewsbury received the first of three yellow cards. Camps soon took advantage of the superior numbers when scrum half Lloyd Roberts took a quick tap penalty and the ball was quickly transferred via Dan Robinson to George Wilkinson who strolled over for his first try of the season.

Shrewsbury finally had something to cheer about when a period of pressure was rounded off by an outrageous through the legs pass to give their winger a try in the corner.

Halbey soon eclipsed that, however, with a brilliant piece of rugby which resulted in Camps’ fourth try. He fielded a kick deep in his own half, turned and set off with a purpose at the advancing Shrewsbury defence. His power and pace took him through to the opposition 22 where he fed the supporting Harry Cunningham. Although Harry was stopped just short, Barney Edwards was on hand to score his 143rd first team try.
Camps were 28-5 up at half time with the elements in their favour in the second half.

The start of the second half was pretty scrappy with Camps struggling at their own line-out but able to disrupt the opposition ball. There was a second yellow for Shrewsbury and then one for Harry Cunningham before Shrewsbury, still strong in the scrum, claimed a pushover try to reduce the deficit by 7 points with a quarter of the game to go.

Camps finally got on the scoreboard in the second half when, after being held up over the line, Halbey picked up at the back of the resulting scrum, and drove over for, surprisingly, his first score of the campaign.Briggsy’s conversion attempt threatened to miss but swerved at the last second and dropped just over the bar.

There was a third yellow for Shrewsbury before Camps rounded things off with a sixth try. Briggsy started it with a nice break and kick into the corner and when the ball came loose Harry C was on hand to pick up, throw a dummy, spin and cross the line for the try his efforts deserved.
Next week is the Christmas lunch and the 1st XV will be entertaining Stafford in a top of the table clash, kicking off at 2.15.
