Report by "The Puff"

The first home league game of the new year ended in disappointment for Camp Hill who, despite having the majority of possession, were edged out by a resilient and determined Wolverhampton side.

The visitors sat in fourth place in the league at start of play just one point and one place above Camps so it always promised to be a competitive affair.

Unfortunately for the home side, they started slowly and found themselves 7-0 down after 2 minutes when Wolverhampton ran in a converted try.

The response from the home side was immediate and a break from fly half Simon Edwards and excellent support from the forwards enabled flanker Adam Pinfield to barge his way over for a try.

Camps now came more into the game but, despite continued pressure in the Wolverhampton 22,they were unable to convert this into points. The visitors were prepared to run the ball whenever they had the chance and, unfortunately, some loose kicking gave them several opportunities.

After converting a penalty for a 10-5 lead, Wolverhampton turned one such opportunity into a try just before the break when full back Barnes sliced through the Camp Hill midfield and outran the cover defence for a fine score in the corner.
Trailing 15-5 Camps came out with a purpose at the start of the second half and a fine burst through the centre by Number 8 Rob Hunt resulted in prop Jan Andersen being held up over the line. From the subsequent scrum Rob Hill picked up at the base and drove over for the try.

Wolverhampton were quickly back on the board with a penalty but Camps continued to press and the visitors conceded several penalties close to their own line resulting in a yellow card.
With a man advantage maintained the pressure and a fine take and drive from a line out resulted in skipper Mark Newton touching down.

Trailing by just three Camps continued to have the lion’s share of possession but the visitors defence held out before another break out and kick ahead from full back Barnes resulted in a try in the corner which sealed victory and deprived Camps of even a bonus point.

Camps have the chance to put things right next week when they entertain Kidderminster Carolians at Haslucks Green Road, kick off 2.15.
