On a perfect day for rugby under yet more glorious October blue skies Camps turned up with a fair sized squad of 13 (mixed 7’s and 8’s)- only to find that Sutton had 31 fully fledged U8’S!!!
In the first match Camps ran well on another big pitch and managed to run in 3 first-half tries, but the lack of tagging was to be our undoing as Sutton ran in 5. In fact we conceded 3 tries before managing to get hold of 1 Sutton tag! (guess what we’ll be practising in the next training session). The second half was much improved and Camps made a solid come back, winning the half 3 tries to 1 and thus managing to secure a draw in the opener.
The second match again saw our defence leak too many tries, but this was due in part to some strong running onto the ball from a couple of key Sutton players (another thing to work on in training). We were never really in contention in this game but there was one high point when Alex Paddock latched onto a pass just inside the Sutton half and showed some real pace to round the defence and score his first try for the club – well done Alex!!!
Camps were looking to square the series in the third and final game but it wasn’t to be. Some great work from Jobe, who dodged and weaved his way to 4 tries, wasn’t enough to see us through with Sutton eventually running out a well deserved 8 -6 winners.
Results:
Sutton 6 – 6 Camp Hill (Try Scorers: Joe 3, Abbie 1, Jobe 1, Will 1)
Sutton 7 – 4 Camp Hill (Try Scorers: Ben 2, Alex 1, Joe 1)
Sutton 8 – 6 Camp Hill (Try Scorers: Jobe 4, Ben 1, Abbie 1)
Player of the Week: Jobe – Some great running to notch up 5 tries on the day, and we’re starting to see a few side steps thrown in as well (didn’t get that off his dad!)
Couple of other mentions:
Well done again to Alex who scored his first try for the club and it was a corker! Hopefully the first of many to come.
Welcome to Byron who joined us today and played his first game in Camp Hill colours.
Squad: Will, Toby, Daniel, Ben, Joe, Jobe, Jacob, Owen, Alex, Josh, Taylor, Abbie, Byron
Next week we can all take a well-earned break for the first weekend of half term, then we’re back on the 30th Oct with a training session at home. It’ll be nice to see the old place again after three weeks on the road!!
We’ll be doing the same in the Feb break i.e. no rugby on the first Sunday. So make a note if you’re planning to go away.
See you in a fortnight,
Ali
