Cannock Fail to Capitalise

Cannock welcomed local rivals Burntwood to the Morgan Ground for the second game of the season after an impressive victory last week!

It was Burntwood who started stronger with some strong running lines from the backs and a quick ball to the outside centre allowed him to put the ball down under the posts. 0-7

The pressure continued to come and a needless penalty under the posts allowed the Burntwood flyhalf to add another 3 points. 0-10

Strong running lines by Cummins and Jay Barrett put Cannock back on the front foot and allowed Pedley to ship the ball wide to Hilliage who was unlucky not to break through the Burntwood defence.

With Burntwood back in possession, some great defence by Stephen Frost and Soccer Jon forced a dropped ball by Burtnwood and allowed our undercover fly half, Scott Lathe, to pass the ball to our full back, Jord Pincombe, just outside our own 22 who beat 2 players and then the full back to get the ball over the try line. 5-10

Cannock, now dominant in possession, had a line out just outside the opposition 22. A quick ball of the top allowed fly half Scott Pedley to find Josh Humph’REYS’ who broke through the first tackle and pulled 3 Burntwood defenders in and then popped the ball to the full back, Jord Pincombe, who glided through and put the ball under the posts. 12-10

Burntwood began to test the Cannock defence once again which held strong and the Burntwood 10 kicked the ball into the corner for a Cannock line out on our 22. Scott Pedley kicked a high ball which was claimed by Pincombe, however, Burntwood managed to get over the ball before the Cannock players could get there. A quick tap penalty and a lapse in concentration by Cannock and Burntwood were back in the lead. 12-15

Cannock started strong in the second half and some strong runs by our second row Kris Hampton and Joe Brookes put Cannock on the front foot. An illegal attempt at a turnover by Burntwood allowed Pincombe to slot a penalty under the sticks. 15-15

Burntwood came back strong with all the possession for 10 minutes and questionable penalties proved costly as a penalty kick to the corner allowed Burtnwood to score off the line out. 15-20

More penalties awarded by the referee in favour of Burntwood allowed the fly half to slot another 3. 15-23

With a man down, Cannock’s defence held strong with Burntwood having all the possession with the extra man. However, the next try came from a catch and drive at the line out with Burntwood making the most of the extra man. 15-28

Cannock forced their way back into the game and some powerful runs from Darren Baugh and Stephen Frost put Cannock back onto the front foot. This forced a penalty to be awarded in favour of Cannock and Pincombe slotted another 3 points. 18-28

With all the penalties going against Cannock, it gave the Burntwood 10 another chance to extend the lead. 18-31

Quick hands from Cannock allowed strong runs from Skipper, Obi Ley and Daniel Blake to get Cannock going forward. James Murphy danced past 3 defenders which allowed Cannock to recycle the ball quickly to Josh Humph’REYS’ who had no space and managed to power through 3 defenders and put the ball under the posts. Pedley slotted the extra 2 points. 25-31

With 1 minute remaining, Cannock put everything into it and a strong run and offload from Halil and quick hands by the Cannock team put the Cannock backs into space but a great covering tackle from the Burntwood winger knocked the ball into touch and the game was over!

FINAL SCORE – Cannock 25 – 31 Burntwood

Special mentions to man of the match Pincombe, Josh Humph’REYS’ and Kris Hampton!

Cannock now look forward to our next league fixture in 2 weeks time against Willenhall.

Thanks to all the sponsors and a special thanks to Mr Dalloway for the super photos.
