Cannock Lions come home with another win at the Morgan ground this weekend.
Cannock receiving from the kick off, started off the game with good intensity and a strong carry from pack leader Jon Freemen in to the Clee Hill Players. Good quick ball from Stephen frost allowed the Cannock forwards to gain a good position and good phase ball, carries from Craig Lump Richards, Jay Barrett and Jim the straight arrow fist, allowed Cannock to gain good momentum in the opening minutes. Phase after phase Cannock forwards built the pressure and managed to camp in the Clee Hill 22 for the best part of 20mins but only to lose possession and for Clee Hill to keep clearing their lines, solid defence from the visitors. Frustration setting in for Cannock, and simple hands would of done trick and Cannock would of scored 2 possibly 3 try's, however, a few silly penalties from Clee Hill allowed the on form Scott Pedley to slot the first 3 points of the game.
From the restart Cannock once again made some strong carries with Kris Hampton and Joe Brookes taking on the Clee hill players, quick ball from Frosty shipped out to the backs and neat hands from Eel put Josh Humphreys through a gap but got tackled by the Clee Hill Defence. Recycled ball out to Halil who is playing a hard running game at the moment with some rude hand offs, great rucking from Brad Stanaway allowed Cannock to spread the ball wide but a knock on in midfield saw the pack scrum down. It was obvious from the scrum that Cannock's pack was going to dominate all game. Clee Hill lose the scrum and Cannock go back on the attack again with Brad making a great run through the middle of the park but only to get stopped 5m shy of the line. Once again quick ball out to the backs would of surely seen a run in try but slow ball and the backs never got to see it as Clee Hill turned it over. So now Jim the arrow fist has been having a great season and one of Cannock's strengths have most definitely been the lineouts, unfortunately what ever Jim the arrow fist was drinking last night gave him a wonky throwing game. Lineout lost and Clee Hill come marching down the pitch. Clee Hill found some fortune in the amount of handling errors Cannock were making and had a good period in Cannock’s half. Clee Hill had a line out in the Cannock 22, Cannock didn't engaged in the line and Soccer went round to tackle the man with the ball, which the referee didn't take a liking too very much and blew for a penalty against Soccer, some words exchanged and the yellow card came out. Clee Hill opted for another line out and good driving maul saw the visitors go over the line for a try.
Cannock restarted the game but was struggling to get going and made hard work of the afternoon. When they did pull things together Clee Hill struggled to cope with Halil, Humphreys, Frost. Daniel Blake took a nasty knock to the head which allowed Conor Gladston to make his debut for the first team. Clee Hill not being very carful at the breakdown and eventually gave a penalty away. Scott Pedley didn’t miss and pulled it back.
The momentum was with Cannock and turned up the pressure with some superb handling and support play with off loads the opposition failed to cope and Larry smashed through three players down the left wing only to get tackled by an outstanding ditch tackle by their fullback. Kris Hampton who was into everything all afternoon and made some big hits and led by example. Dan Clarke came on the pitch from the bench and made some important tackles. Cannock allowed Clee Hill to get back into game and put Cannock some under pressure, with this pressure a high tackle was given. Clee Hill opted for the post on managed to slot kick.
Cannock’s defence was doing well but the persistence and intensity of the attack eventually led to Clee Hill knocking on the ball. A front row replacement and the returning Scott Lathe struts on to the pitch. A monster scrum and Cannock are on the attack again, good ball from Frost out to Andy Lawson unleashed the backs on the attack. Clee Hill threw everything they had a Cannock and with less than 10 minutes to go Cannock were awarded a penalty in Clee Hills half. The fate of the game was in Scott Pedley's hands. No problems with handling the pressure and kicking it straight down the middle of the uprights.
Cannock sore out the last few moments of the game and come home with the win, final result been This was definitely not Cannock best performance and must have been frustrating to watch from the side lines. There will be a lot to work on in training this week but another win at home keeps Cannock in top half of table.
Final Score 9-8
Man of the match this week is Scott Pedley for his kicking and defensive game.
Dick of the Day went to Jim the" not so straight arrow" fist, :)
