Cannock 21 v 16 Telford

A great weekend for Cannock Rugby club saw all three senior teams claim victory this weekend.
Cannock (sponsored by DGL) saw themselves rise to third in the table after a close fought battle with Telford, Telford came expecting a win despite their lowly league position, some amateurish comments on social media sites gave Cannock any additional motivation they may have needed. Apparently Telford are far to ‘good’ a club to lose to Cannock, apparently they aren’t!!

Early possession from the visitors saw them spend time in the Cannock half early on in the game, strong carries from the skipper at 7 and the skipper at 8 (the reason that Telford’s actual skipper (8) was not allowed to be the skipper involves a comical story about a ……. In fact we best not go into that or we’ll upset the ……. oh I’ll leave it there, it’s not worth the fines) suffice to say the 7 and 8 carried well, one good carry from the 13 saw his work done for the day and gave Telford possession from which they were awarded and converted a penalty.
For most of the remaining half Cannock were fairly dominant and pressure on Telford’s defensive lineout allowed Ley to intercept a pass with his boot, collect and score under the sticks, converted. The game was hotly contended at the breakdown and saw great work from both teams back row at the break-down with both teams’ front 5’s battling strongly at the set piece.

Cannock started strongly in the second half with great work at the break down allowing Jukes and Macdougall time to control possession, from such quick ball Macdougall dummied a pass and drove over the line to score Cannock’s second which he then converted. Ley added his second and Cannock’s third shortly after with a strong carry through a crowd of defenders. Macdougall converted again.
Without getting into too much trouble it’s difficult to comment on the final 40 minutes (remember we’ve already played 20 minutes of the second half), so I’ll quickly summarise: Telford scored two tries unconverted and were then gifted (by whom I’m not allowed to say) a penalty under the sticks which they converted with (at last) the final kick of the game.
The final score was 21-16, Telford were great visitors and we look forward to the return fixture with relish, the game actually could have been one of the best games of the season with both teams really getting stuck in, unfortunately is was not allowed to be as enjoyable as it should have been.
Man of the match for Cannock was awarded to Stephen Frost for an energetic performance at open-side flanker. Cannock would like to thank Paul Milgate for all the work he has done taking photos so far this, he is doing an amazing job and deserves all the credit he get for his photos.
The 2’s travelled to Tamworth and came away with a fantastic 18-19 victory with man of the match going to George Milonas.
The 3’s were at home against Trentham and won by a resounding 72-14 with man of the match being awarded to Freddie Langham.
Another great weekend of rugby for the club, the juniors had a fantastic session from 10:30 till 12:00 followed by three wins out of three for the senior sides, further invaluable experience for some lads new to the game who are rapidly showing improvement and will soon be threatening for 1st team shirts.
Anybody interested in joining the club should get themselves down the Morgan Ground (behind the Blue Ginger) on a Wednesday evening 7:00 - 8:30, juniors Saturday 10:30 - 12:00, and this coming Saturday the 1’st xv are playing Trentham in the Owen Cup at home and the club vets are playing away at a secret location, any interest in this should contact Rob Walker for further details
