Capital fall agonising short in a thrilling game against Edinburgh 1st

After the narrowest of wins against Edinburgh 1st in our last meeting, Capital knew this season’s league fixture against them would be a tasty encounter. With Capital pretty much at full strength, a repeat result was a possibility but it would be one hell of match as Edinburgh had several players eyeing up places on the Scotland Squad.

The start didn’t quite go to plan and followed a similar fashion to our fixture against Edinburgh 2nd with the opposition starting to build a healthy lead. With some slick skills from Edinburgh and youth on their side, they managed to penetrate the Capital defence on several occasions. Although keeper Dave pulled off some great saves, he couldn’t stop them all and the ball found itself in the Capital goal on a few occasions. After a quick time out and some wise words from the Captain, Capital started to make amends. A quick break from Adam resulted in Capital finally getting on the score board. With some firming up of the Capital defence and some great individual marking from Gill, the Edinburgh goal rush was slowed right down. Ailsa also took the initiative, along with some good support play from attack and managed to get a further two goals. The score at half time was 7-3 to Edinburgh.

With confidence growing in the Capital camp, the second half started well as increased pressure was applied to Edinburgh and a few errors from them started to appear. There was some well worked sliding from the Capital defence and further great saves from keeper Dave, Edinburgh were finding it increasingly hard to score. The Capital mid field also started to link up well resulting in more goals from Ailsa and, following a superb cut, from Fi S. It was her time to register on the score board. Despite a surge from Edinburgh, when three quick goals were scored, Capital were getting the upper hand on the opposition and Adam managed to penetrate there defence again to get a brace in the game, before the final whistle. After being 7-3 down in the first half, Capital won the second half, but fell agonisingly short with the final score being 8-11.

Olive also had a key role to play as she marshalled our subs and implemented some greater player rotation to maximise the use of the full subs bench in an efficient and effective manner.

Man of the match went to Keeper Dave after an epic performance in goal making Edinburgh work for each and every one of their goals.

Despite the loss, Capital took away an all important losing bonus point that could prove vital at the end of season.
