An early start for the first trip of the season to the north east took us to Whitley Bay for a match against Rockliff. Last season there was a large gulf in size between teams but once Carlisle realised that they had closed the height difference, it was a much more competitive match up.
After an evenly fought opening, Rockliff drew first blood with tries on the 5 mins, 15 mins and 20 mins mark. Carlisle's mobile pack were however growing in confidence and a series of drives resulted in Sam Tunnicliff being held up over the line. Fast hands by the half backs from the base of the scrum put Theo Manihera in for Carlisle's first as the half drew to a close.
Rockliff responded with the second half's opening try before Brooklyn was released to race in on the wing for Carlisle's second try. A number of further chances unfortunately were missed by Carlisle and as the changes came, Rocliff were allowed to finish the stronger with two tries and a penalty try for some strange technicality which gave the score line a flattering look.
Carlisle were much improved from last season and Rockliff are already looking forward to the rematch as a result.
