A brace from Alex Howes helped Carlton Town maintain their promotion challenge with a comfortable 4-2 win against Corby Town.

In an even start, Corby had the first real chance but Kieran Preston made a superb save from Callum Westwood.

Carlton imposed themselves and took a deserved lead on 28 minutes when Nat Watson fired home into the bottom corner after some good play by Tyler Blake.

The Steelmen levelled seven minutes later when Conner Furey's long-range effort deceived Preston and sneaked in. But the Millers regained the lead on the stroke of half time when Howes fired home after a great run by Watson.

Carlton dominated the second half and Howes made it 3-1 on 58 minutes with a superb strike, picking up the ball on the half way line, running at the Corby defence and then hitting an unstoppable 25-yarder past Matt Hall.

Toby Moore sealed the win eight minutes later, heading home unmarked after a fine run and cross by Howes.

Corby offered little but did get a late consolation with a Josh Flanagan header in the last minute.

The win sees Carlton move to fifth in the table with 35 points from 16 games. They are next in action against Gedling Miners Welfare in the Notts Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

A full report from today's game will be on site tomorrow.
