Carlton Town’s frustrating start to the season continued as they lost 4-2 at home to Sheffield.

The Millers raced into an early two goal lead and looked in complete control, but they allowed the visitors a way back into the game before half time and were second best in the second half as Club completed a remarkable turnaround.

This was a second home defeat in four days and a third in five matches this season. Worryingly, this was the third time in just 10 games that Carlton have conceded four goals or more this season. The Millers will know that improvement will be required quickly in order to have an impact at the top end of the table this season.

Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey made two changes to the side which had lost against Grantham last time out. In came Tyler Johal and Khyle Sargent to replace Niall Hylton and Alex Howes.

The Millers had the perfect start when Brad Wells headed home a Johal corner on just four minutes to open the scoring. Wells should have extended the lead seven minutes later when a ball into the box was flicked on by a Sheffield defender to the striker but he lifted his volley over the bar from just four yards.

Minutes later Carlton did have their second goal. Wells and Kyle Tomlin played some lovely quick football with the latter sending Aaron O’Connor through on goal. He took the ball around goalkeeper Jordan Pierrpoint and was then poleaxed by the Sheffield goalkeeper. It was a challenge that would ordinarily have lead to a red card but the keeper was only shown a yellow, before O’Connor got up to convert the spot kick.

Lawrence Gorman then fired just over the top from the edge of the box before O’Connor headed a Nat Watson free kick over the bar.

The visitors then survived another penalty shout when Adam Watson appeared to bring down Wells in the area.

For the first half hour it was all Carlton as the team played some lovely football on a fine surface, but they dropped the tempo of their play and Sheffield started to gain more possession.

With six minutes remaining before half time the visitors pulled a goal back. A long ball into the area was not cleared as it should have been and when the ball eventually dropped to Reece Fielding he lashed a half-volley into the far corner of the net.

Sheffield looked much sharper in the second half and Stephen Brogan fired high over the bar from a good position after Johal had initially blocked Basile Zottos.

Zottos in particular was causing the Millers problems and he drew a decent save from Mikey emery after a cross from Sam Greenhouse. Shortly afterwards Dan Brown was on hand to block another promising Zottos attack.

Club levelled from the penalty spot on 67 minutes after Nat Watson handled a Zottos cross. Rory Coleman slipped as he took the penalty but Emery had already dived and the ball made it across the line. Carlton claimed there had been a double-strike as Coleman slipped but the goal stood and video evidence appeared to suggest that was the correct decision.

Within nine minutes Sheffield were in front when Connor Cutts’s long range effort took a deflection off the unfortunate Brown to wrongfoot Emery.

Sargent had a chance to equalise on 80 minutes but he volleyed high over the bar from 15 yards.

With the game entering added time Emery made an excellent save from Nathan Modest who had been sent clean through. But in the sixth minute of added time he could do nothing to stop Sheffield’s fourth as Benefit Ndlovu raced away on the left and fired low into the corner of the net to the delight of the numerous travelling supporters.
