Carlton Town produced arguably their best performance of the season as they won 3-1 away at play-off chasing Dunston.

Niall Davie had put the Millers ahead just before the break after an even first half. But the Millers had to withstand a barrage of home pressure despite doubling their lead on the hour through Brad Wells.

Dunston did pull a goal back on 81 minutes but Niall Hylton wrapped up the win in the last minutes with a superb solo goal. In truth though, this was a fine team performance with everyone putting in a fully committed effort to keep the home side at bay and goalkeeper Richard Stainsby pulling off a series of top class saves.

Carlton made two enforced changes to the team which had beaten Pontefract last time out. In returned Martin Ball and Nat Watson for the absent Lawrence Gorman and the injured Aaron O’Connor.

After some days of heavy rain the pitch was very soft, but Dunston had to be congratulated for getting the game on at all.

Dunston had the first chance of the game on 10 minutes when Liam Thear’s fierce shot was excellent saved by Stainsby.

Khyle Sargent, playing at right back again, headed just over from a Davie corner with Carlton’s first effort shortly afterwards.

Danny Elliott then did well to stop a Dunston attack with an excellent tackle, followed up by a fine Ball block.

A lovely passing move midway through the half led to Elliott shooting just wide from 25 yards.

Watson was controlling proceedings from just behind lone striker Wells, but his afternoon ended early when he pulled up injured and was replaced by Kyle Dixon on 26 minutes.

The Millers survived a dangerous moment when an excellent Jack Elliott run and cross flew across the Carlton goal with no one on hand to convert.

And with five minutes of the half remaining Carlton took the lead. A lovely run from Hylton led to a corner which was taken by Dixon whose delivery found Davie unmarked in the penalty area and he headed home.

Dunston put Carlton under pressure from the beginning of the second half and Stainsby was called upon to make a superb save on 56 minutes, tipping a Carl Finnigan point-blank header over the bar. Shortly afterwards he saved another close-range header, this time from Terry Galbraith.

Carlton doubled their lead on the hour. Goalkeeper Dan Staples threw the ball out to Craig Scott but on the heavy pitch the ball didn’t carry and Alex Howes intercepted, ran at goal and then had the presence of mind to square the ball to the unmarked Wells who directed the ball into the empty net and celebrated with the ecstatic travelling supporters.

Carlton replaced Davie with Kyle Tomlin and then dug in, with Ball leading the defence magnificently, ably assisted by Dan Brown, Sargent and Hylton. The work rate of Howes, Jared Holmes, Elliott, Dixon, Tomlin and especially Wells was phenomenal as they repelled every Dunston effort to launch an attack.

The home side finally found a way through on 80 minutes. Stainsby made another great save, this time from a Jake Jensen shot, but Galbraith converted a loose ball at the far post from the resulting corner.

Carlton kept their shape, with Ryan Tait now on the pitch having replaced Elliott shortly before Dunston’s goal, and kept the home side away from the Millers goal.

With the game entering the final minute Holmes and Wells combined to send Hylton away on the left of midfield. He ran half the length of the pitch before rifling past Staples to secure an excellent away win for the Millers.
