Carlton Town and Stamford drew 4-4 in an extraordinary match at Stoke Lane.

Both sides had further goals disallowed, both sides missed some great chances and in truth the score could have been 8-8!

With no pressures of promotion or relegation for either side, they both simply attacked at every opportunity and it was great entertainment for the spectators present.

Carlton manager Wayne Scott made two changes to the side which drew with Romulus last time out, with Josh Rae and Kyle Stovell replacing William Mellors-Blair and Niall Davie.

Aaron Hooton opened the scoring on six minutes. He was fouled just outside the area and when the free kick was played into the six yard box, the striker took advantage of a defensive mix-up to take the ball around Alex Brown and slot home.

Stamford levelled seven minutes later when Jordan Smith headed home from close range following a long throw.

Back came Carlton and they were ahead again within three minutes. Brown, under pressure from Hooton, could only punch a high ball to Stovell and he calmly steered the ball into the corner of the net from 18 yards.

The Daniels were not deterred and they levelled for a second time on 31 minutes with an absolute peach of a goal. Jon Challinor picked up the ball on the edge of the box and hit a screamer into the corner of the net.

Rae then fired just wide for the Millers before Carlton went 3-2 ahead on 39 minutes. Stovell did well to gain possession deep on the left wing. He played the ball back to Daniel Fletcher whose lovely cross was chested by Hooton into the path of Rae who hit a stunning volley into the bottom corner of the net.

Jake Carlisle then went through on goal following an Alexander Troke free kick but his touch was too light and the effort was saved.

With the game in the first minute of first-half added time the Daniels equalised for a third time. Jack Steggles missed a cross from the right and Smith hooked the ball into the net from a tight angle.

There was no let up in the second half. Carlton thought they’d gone 4-3 up when the ball ended up in the back of the net following a long throw but the effort was disallowed for a foul on Brown.

Grant Ryan was then sent clean though on goal but he hit his shot straight at Steggles who saved.

The visitors went ahead for the first time on 63 minutes. A quick break down the right saw a cross fired home at the near post by Challinor.

Still Carlton came forward. Rae saw a volley from a Troke corner headed off the line while at the other end Ryan fired just wide from the edge of the box.

With 13 minutes remaining Carlton made it 4-4 with another great goal. Keiran Walker crossed and Rae headed to Troke who stepped past his man and rifled a left foot drive into the top of the net from 20 yards.

Stamford came forward and two minutes later Steggles made a wonder save from a fierce effort by Challinor. From the resultant corner the Daniels had the ball in the net but it was ruled out as the ball had gone out of play.

With the game in the final minute of added time Danny Elliott hit a shot destined for the top corner until a fine save from Brown. It would have been harsh in the extreme for either side to have lost a truly wonderful game of football.
