Carlton Town produced their best display of the season as they beat Hanley Town 2-0 in the FA Trophy.

The Millers controlled the first 75 minutes of the game and were very good value for the two goal lead given to them through Kyle Tomlin and Niall Davie. In truth they should have been further ahead by then and although Hanley did respond well in the closing stages, the damage had already been done.

Managers Tommy Brookbanks and Mark Harvey made four changes to the side which lost at Brighouse last time out. In came Ryan Tait, Tomlin, Tyler Blake and new re-signing Tyler Johal. Out of the side went Aaron Opoku (suspended) and Dean Freeman, Khyle Sargent and Nat Watson (all injured).

With the game having been postponed on Saturday following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the teams entered the pitch to a fine cornet solo of the national anthem from season ticket holder Alastair Weir.

On an excellent surface Carlton began with intent, and were moving the ball at pace along the floor as they looked to open up their opponents.

Tomlin saw an early effort from distance go just wide and the Millers were presented with a golden chance to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty on 15 minutes. Goalkeeper Kieran Harrison saved a Blake shot but with Tomlin about toe convert the rebound he was brought down by Charlie Walford. Blake stepped up to take the spot kick but could only crash his effort against the crossbar.

Tomlin then headed wide from a glorious position from a Tait corner.

Hanley’s best chance of the half fell to Daniel Glover, but he drove an angled shot wide of target after receiving a fine ball from the right.

It was Carlton’s midfield who were on top though, with Danny Elliott and Tomlin having fine games in the centre, and Tait and Davie always looking to create opportunities.

Johal and Lawrence Gorman were constantly looking to get forward down the flanks and Martin Ball and Dan Brown had almost complete control in the centre of defence.

Blake saw a shot deflected wide before Carlton deservedly went ahead in first half stoppage time. Brad Wells hit a fierce drive from the left side of the area which Harrison could only parry into the path of Blake. He fed Tomlin who steered the ball into the net from 12 yards.

The Millers kept on the front foot as the second half began and a move involving Tomlin, Blake and Tait saw Harrison save from Tait before Blake fired the loose ball over the bar.

Carlton doubled their lead on 54 minutes with a lovely goal. Ball advanced towards the centre circle before playing a defence-splitting pass that was beautifully controlled on the run by Davie. As Harrison closed the angle Davie simply swept the ball past him and into the net to the delight of the home support.

Hanley thought they’d pulled a goal back on 63 minutes when Louis Dodds charged down a Mikey Emery clearance with his arms and tapped home. The referee initially gave the goal but changed his mind after speaking to the linesman.

With time running out Hanley started to get into the game. Christopher Dagnell hit a curling shot just over the bar and Dan Brown was alert to clear off the line after Dodds had beaten Emery to the ball.

In between those two chances Aaron O’Connor, making a welcome first appearance of the season from the bench, had almost scored for Carlton after latching onto the short backpass, but Harrison saved.

Dagnell had one final effort hit over the bar but Carlton kept their composure and earned themselves a trip to Lincoln Utd in the next round.
