Determined victory over Port

Saturday saw the 2nd game of the new season as we entertained a Southport side looking to claim their first victory of the season. Carnforth had a confidence boost last week with victory over Trafford MV and the selection committee were able to keep with much of the same squad - Jason Waterhouse returned to the starting pack with Liam Hall at Number 8 - the backs remained the same. Last weeks condition were not the best with the driving rain but glorious sunshine on a great pitch saw the Carnforth squad run in 7 tries.
The hosts made an ideal start as within 3 minute the first try had been scored, centre Joe Harrison scooped the ball to full Mathew Short, he made a superb run before offloading to stand off Nick Hamer, he cut back inside the full back to score, Short converted. Back came Southport and they camped up inside the Carnforth 22 for a solid period of time. They received penalty after penalty but could not find a way through the determined defence, again John Greenland, Dave Hones and Brad Wheatman putting in some big tackles to keep their try line intact. The visitors did come away with points though with a successful penalty.
Back hit Carnforth and on half way Greenland took the line out, Wheatman took play on before passing to Jack Edmondson, the centre had plenty to do but he was able to power through the tackles to score a fine individual try, Short converted. Wheatman seemed to be involved everywhere for his team and his reward came 20 minutes into the game when he made a bustling surge up the pitch from 40 metres out to record his first try of the season.
On came Jason Short and Sean Weed to replace the hard working Hall and Sam Tomlinson in the pack as Carnforth kept their squad rotating. On the stroke of half time Southport slotted a second penalty after Harrison was binned for a high tackle. 19 - 6 at half time and Carnforth knew the game was far from over.
A good start was key to the second half, Dan Blenkharn made a superb break, Jason Short took the play on before his offload to Edmondson allowed the centre to stretch out and score his second of the game, Mathew Short converted. Chris Whaley made his first appearance of the season as he replaced skipper Shane Weed in the front row. A scrum against the head from Hones saw the backs receive the ball, Donald Haddow linked with Hamer who sent the ball to Harrison, Edmondson took the play on before his pass to Will Briggs saw the winger sprint down the line to register his first of the day, Mathew Short adding the 2.
Jason Short, Tomlinson, Harrison and Mathew Short continued to make breaks with Blenkharn also going close to his first try of the season from a quickly taken penalty. With a few minutes to go Hamer made a superb break but he was tackled just short of the line, the ball was popped upto the supporting Waterhouse who powered over the line, again Mathew Short converted. In the last play of the game Briggs received the ball inside his own 22, a step one way and a step back the other way saw the winger go clear and sprint away down the wing for an excellent try, his 4th in 2 games since joining the club. Shorts conversion was the last kick of the match to seal a 47 - 6 victory.
This weekend we travel to Burnley to face a league and cup double - training Tuesday please.
