Carnforth ended 2016 on a high note with victory over a decent Burnley side, this victory keeps Carnforth firmly in the hunt at the top end of the table, the win also records an unbeaten home run throughout 2016. A few changes were made to the team with Martin Pike and Kieron Morgan on the wings, Brad Wheatman returning to the back row with Jason Short in the centres.
On a foggy day both teams were determined to warm up the crowd with some running rugby and the first half had plenty of action from both teams. Carnforth hit the ground running and were in the lead within 4 minutes, Nathan OConnor and Jason Short made the breaks, Skipper Shane Weed played the final pass to allow flanker Joe Harrison to burst through for a try, Mathew Short converted.
Carnforth were seeing plenty of the ball with OConnor and Mathew Short making countless breaks up the pitch, this combination along with Nick Hamer saw Carnforth grab a 2nd try. Short and OConnor played the old one-two before Short cut back to score under the posts, his conversion giving Carnforth a 14 point lead.
The visitors hit back strongly and their lively half backs caused problems all day - they kept Carnforth pinned back in their own 22 for 10 minutes with the hosts applying excellent defensive work, Sam Tomlinson and Jason Waterhouse both put in great work to keep the visitors at bay as the Burnley team could find no way through.
To rub salt into the wound Carnforth broke out and scored a third try - Pike started the move down the right flank before OConnor took the ball and went off on a lightning run to score another great solo try, Short slotting the extra 2 points. Just before half time and the 4th try was notched , a quickly taken penalty resulted in the skipper Weed powering through for a popular try as he gave his team a 26 - 0 lead at half time.
Carnforth used their subs with Adam Seaton and Steve Mallet getting valuable game time for the team. An early yellow card to Harrison in the second half did not dampen Carnforth and when Hamer put Jason Short through a superb gap the centre went down the pitch before offloading to number 8 Dan Blenkharn, he sprinted away to score his 8th try of the season in front his new born daughter. Short added the 2 for a 33 - 0 lead.
The home crowd could perhaps think Carnforth would now run away with the game and pile up some points but a couple of replacements from the Burnley squad revitalised them and they came back into the game well. The front row was a good strong battle all afternoon with the visitors having a strong pack on show. Burnley - as they did at Holden Road back in September - hit back strongly and with Carnforth being reduced to 13 men following two yellow cards the visitors scored two tries in quick succession and could have had more but for some dogged defensive work with Archie Rich, Matti Davenport and Donald Haddow all putting in great work.
33 - 10 the final score as Carnforth remain 2nd in the league - we start back on the 7th January with a game away at Tarleton. We thank the Burnley "Christmas Dinners" for their time in the clubhouse - a great set of lads - we wish them well for the remainder of the season.
Man of the match - Nathan OConnor defeated the Burnley Carrott.
