Defeated on the road as we slip to third

New Year - same old problems for skipper Shane Weed with the selection of his squad - Joe Harrison and Brad Wheatman two key players adding to the continual injury list. A 16 man squad was assembled to travel to Tarleton to face a very strong outfit on their own patch. The Tarleton squad have ambitions of promotion and on this showing they have every chance.
A full bloodied affair was on show on a greasy Carr Lane pitch in front of a decent crowd who watched this game rather than the main game round the corner. The game was played at a rapid pace with both sides eager to run the ball. Tarleton in the previous game at Carnforth showed their excellent running skills but Carnforth claimed the victory that day. The hosts grabbed 3 tries (not 4 as the referee had down !!!) against Carnforths two but the difference was the penalty count as Tarleton were able to notch 9 points from Carnforths infringements.
Both teams had early chances before Tarleton took the lead, the ball came out at the back of the scrum too quick and the home scrum half was able to pounce on the ball to score. Minutes later and a charged down kick saw the hosts grab a second try and a 12 - 0 lead. Carnforths injuries continued with Dale Lowrie leaving the pitch, on came Chris Whaley to the pack and Sam Tomlinson moving back to the wing.
Carnforth kept falling foul of the match official with Jack Edmondson having a 10 minute rest behind the posts. A penalty saw them increase the lead to 15. Whilst down to 14 men it was Carnforth who looked stronger and stand off Nick Hamer showed his power when he went through for a try, Mathew Short converted to get his team back in the side.
The visitors hit back with Dan Blenkharn, Liam Hall and Jason Short having a great battle from the back row, all 3 going close to scoring but on the stroke of half time Tarleton extended their lead to 18 - 7 with a penalty.
Carnforth knew they had to start the better of the teams, Tomlinson, Weed, Hall and Paddy Bowers all made breaks but this Tarleton side are a hard outfit to break down - well coached and a good set of players who seem to be pushing for first team slots.
A third penalty was slotted, this time when their number 10 was tripped up (he actually clipped the referee on his way through) but 3 points taken and a vital 21 - 7 lead.
Jason Short had a 10 minute break for a high tackle but once again Carnforth refused to buckle. They started to receive penalty after penalty for continual infringements from the home team who somehow managed to stay with 15 players on the field. Carnforth battered the line but the home defence was very strong and well drilled, they looked dangerous on the counter attack with an excellent back row and three quarters.
With 10 minutes to go though Carnforth did go through when Jason Short took the ball 10 yards out and battered his way through the defence to ground the ball to the disgust of the home scrum half who chucked the ball at a Carnforth player in anger - in front of the referee but no action taken. The conversion was rushed and missed but Carnforth had the momentum.
The result though was soon sorted when a mistake in the visiting 22 saw Tarleton player Bart gleefully take the interception and sprint away to take the game away from Carnforth and claim the home team a vital victory at the business end of the 3 North table.
Tarleton - we congratulate you on this victory and wish you well for the remainder of the season - we attended the clubhouse afterwards and thanks for the hospitality.
Carnforth - lets regroup and support Shane this week please - a home game against Oldham 2nds this weekend.
