Saturday saw arguably Carnforths toughest fixture in a number of seasons as we entertained champions elect Penrith 2nds. The Cumbrians travelled down the M6 looking to keep their excellent unbeaten season going - 20 league games plus a cup run have seen them embark on a tremendous season. They arrived early and it was clear in the warm up that Penrith were intent on claiming a decent victory.
Carnforth have suffered with players not being available over recent months and the biggest game of the season saw the squad missing - Jason Waterhouse, Chris Whaley, John Greenland, Nathan OConnor, Jack Edmondson, Brad Wheatman and Phil Metcalfe , there was a club debut for Jamie Reeves and a return to the club for James Skitt.
Penrith made a decent start to the game but the defence stood firm before Carnforth enjoyed a decent time of possession in the away half, Dan Blenkharn, Jason Short, Mathew Short and Dale Lowrie all going close but the away defence were a well organised side and kept Carnforth out. 12 minutes into the game and Penrith were able to break through for the opening try through the middle of the park. Penrith seized the initiative and two quickly taken tries - both well worked from a line out - saw them take control of the game at 19 - 0.
Carnforth refused to lie down and Nick Hamer, Jason Short and Blenkharn all made breaks - the Carnforth scrum seemed to have the upper hand with hooker Dave Hones taking a few against the head. Penrith could not contain the Carnforth pack and penalties were conceded.
Despite the efforts of the home team they could not break down the defence, Blenkharn going close once again as he was stopped close to the try line.
To make matters worse for Carnforth, Penrith were able to move back down the pitch to notch two further tries and a 31 - 0 half time lead.
The second half saw Carnforth again have plenty of possession - Dave Cadman (in the area for a family do) had a superb game as he linked with Skitt in the second row. Penrith opened the scoring in the second half with another converted try, the number 8 had a massive impact on the game with their stand off also very influential in gaining the result. The man of the match award for Penrith went to the number 8 but to be honest there were a few contenders.
Carnforths efforts were rewarded when a break through the middle saw Mathew Short send a cross field kick down the wing to allow Sam Tomlinson to scoop up and score out wide, Short adding the extras to give Carnforth movement on the score board. Skipper Shane Weed had moved from prop to number 8 as Jason Short slotted in at centre. Short made several surging runs with Weed enjoying his spell at the back of the scrum as Carnforths pack continued their good work.
With Penrith keeping their squad refreshed and using their replacements wisely they grabbed two late tries to seal a fine 52 - 7 victory.
Penrith - we wish you well for the league and cup double and many thanks for your time in the clubhouse - a great credit to your club.
Carnforth - this weekend we face a trip to Liverpool St Helens - lets all be available and make it easier for Shane please.
Man of the match - Sam Tomlinson
